10.3 g of benzaldehyde is mixed with 6.18g of alanine with no solvent, in a Erlenmeyer flask, preferably with a condenser attached to the top.
The reaction is heated in a oil bath for 40 minutes to 1 ? hours( the oil bath should be maintained at 150 to 160 degrees Celsius.
The reaction is then allowed to cool.
Then add enough ethanol/Hcl as a liquid mass and then boil off the ethanol.
100ml of dh2o is added and a couple of drops of hcl.
The top layer is about 5ml, with a brown color.
Then 25ml of toluene or xylene is added and shook.
As CO2 evolves, pour off top layer.
Repeat this step 2 more times.
Finally a clean layer of toluene=( xylene ) is added as well as a 20% solution of NaOH.
The unreacted alanine hcl will drop out of the solution as plain alanine again( it will settle to the bottom ).

To do the reaction 20 grams of ephedrine or phenylpropanolamine (PPA) is added to 50-100 ml of hardware store acetone in a glass container.
Then swim would mix 25 ml of water with 10 ml of sulfuric acid, and then mix the prescribed amount of potassium dichromate (10 grams) into the acid-water solution, then cool the solution in ice.
After cooling, the sulfuric acid-chromate solution should be drop wise added to the ephedrine( or PPA) solution.
Make sure the ephedrine(PPA) is sitting in a bed of ice because the reaction produces heat and if it gets too hot to will decompose the ephedrine(PPA) into worthless fragments and you will get a poor yield and ruin your Cat.
After the reaction is complete in a few hours(2 to 4), swim would pour the reaction mixture into about 400 ml of water, the add about 20 ml of isopropyl alcohol to it.
This will neutralize the rest of the chromate so the chromate will no longer oxidize the ephedrine(PPA) and make the green chromium compound easier to separate from the Cat.
Then make a 25% solution of lye and water and cool the solution in ice.
When it is cool, add the lye in small amounts to the ephedrine(PPA)-sulfuric acid-chromate solution, which should be in an ice bath.
After each addition of lye solution, shake for about 30 seconds and return to the ice bath.
After all of the lye solution has been added, shake vigorously for about five minutes to ensure that all of the Cat has been freebased.
The ph should be between 8 and 12.
Then add 100 ml of camper fuel to the solution and shake again for several minutes.
Let the 2 layers separate, and then suck off the top layer with an eye dropper or baster and put into a separate container.
Repeat this again with another 100 ml of camper fuel, shake for several minutes, and separate the top layer again.
Then take the camper fuel and add 50 ml of a 20% solution of hydrochloric acid to it and shake vigorously for about 5 minutes.
Let the 2 layers separate again and separate the top layer of camper fuel from the hydrochloric acid layer.
This time you will keep the bottom or HCL acid layer.
Take this solution of HCL acid-cathinone and put it in a glass sauce pan, or a Teflon coated pan and boil it down a little to reduce the volume, but not too much(about 15 to 20 ml should be left).
Cool the solution and then add 10 to 20 parts of acetone to the solution( add small amounts at a time, stirring it after each addition.
Crystals of Cat should began to separate as the acetone is added, since Cat is not soluble in acetone and when the solution begins to become predominantly acetone it will separate as crystals.
It may be best to cool the acetone in the freezer for an hour or so to ensure the crystal separation and possibly use less acetone.
When the crystals have separated, put the container in the freezer for an hour, then take the solution and pour it through a coffee filter.
You may want to put the coffee filter into a small metal strainer or colander, since acetone can dissolve certain types of plastics and you don’t want to have plastic end up in your dope.
After the filtering is complete, let the crystals dry and scrape them off the coffee filter and enjoy.
Your yield should be about 50 to 80%.
You can also set up a still-type contraption and bubble HCl gas into the camper fuel.
Simply add sulfuric acid drop wise into a solution of HCl and table salt( non-iodized) making sure that there is a lot of salt creating a sort of paste.
