Re: Ministry of Behavioral Health

Noticed there was no info on WI treatment centers, so thought I'd add some. Ministry of Behavioral Health is a treatment center in Steven's Point, WI. It is a fairly small program, ranging from about five to fourteen patients at a time, which is the perfect size imho- usually somewhat of an imbalance in M:F ratio, but not a big deal. You stay in a room alone or with one roommate, have access to a telephone and shared bathroom (one bathroom and set of rooms for the women, one for the men on the other side of the house) The program consists of many different activities- starts out with a morning meditation and sharing, meals (everyone makes their own breakfast and lunch; dinner is served as a group and patients take turns cooking and shopping), group discussion sessions led by counselors, the option of going to AA/NA meetings- one or two hosted weekly at the house, others nearby, weekly to bi-weekly visits to the YMCA to exercise, bikes provided as well for exercise/transportation, and assignment to an individual counselor with whom you meet one on one once or twice a week. Swim was very impressed with the staff and the program, and feels it was beneficial for her to participate. They do allow patients on suboxone maintenance and other medications, but I don't think methadone is an option, and they are not generally equipped to deal with patients with a significant medical history other than addiction or dual diagnosis- would recommend detoxing in a hospital or switching to maintenance meds before starting your stay if you have significant physical addiction to opiates or alcohol and feel you will be very ill, to maximize the benefits of the time spent there. Inpatient treatment is of course not helpful for everyone, but can be an excellent resource to get started on the road to sobriety by learning basic coping skills and strategies and being removed from your using environment and friends for the first month of sobriety. Also, they were very accommodating of food allergies, vegetarian diets, etc- just be sure to let them know in advance what you need and they will do their best to provide it. Everyone there is very supportive and the program is highly recommended. It is I believe owned by a Christian or catholic hospital or charity, but the program is not religion-based.
