Felony charges filed against Lil Wayne

YUMA, Ariz. - The Yuma County Attorney's Office filed felony drug and weapons charges Friday against Lil Wayne.

The 25-year-old rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., was charged in justice court in Wellton, Ariz., with one count each of possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, misconduct involving weapons and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is scheduled to appear Feb. 12 at a preliminary hearing.

Carter was in court, where a judge lifted a bail restriction prohibiting him from leaving the state. He was arrested after his tour bus was stopped in southern Arizona late Tuesday and is free on bail.

Carter's lawyer, James Tilson, said his client was mostly staying positive, adding: "He is very concerned about the charges."

Free to travel outside Arizona until his next hearing, Carter was on his way to perform in Richmond, Va., Friday night.

"He absolutely will be present at his next court date," Tilson said.

Carter's bus was stopped at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Dateland, Ariz., 78 miles east of Yuma. He was traveling with 11 other people.

Ramona Sanchez, a spokeswoman for the Drug Enforcement Administration, said earlier that a Border Patrol canine unit alerted agents to the presence of illegal drugs on the bus. A search of the bus yielded nearly 4 ounces of marijuana, just over an ounce of cocaine, 41 grams of ecstasy and miscellaneous drug paraphernalia.

Officials also found a .40-caliber pistol registered to Carter, who has a concealed weapons permit in Florida.

In October, Carter and several other rappers were named in a federal lawsuit filed by music publishing companies, accusing them of sampling other artists' songs without paying licensing fees.

Birdman and Lil Wayne won a viewers' choice award for their song "Stuntin' Like My Daddy" at Black Entertainment Television's 2007 Hip-Hop Awards.

Many times have SWIM has travelled this area. SWIM knows of Yuma, and SWIM would frequently visit. When SWIM first visited, SWIM was very surprised to find a SECOND BORDER in the US.

Any way out of Yuma, SWIY are going through a secondary border check.

To the West on I8, SWIY have the normal "Cali checkpoint" except... US Border Patrol are there too...

To the North on 95, SWIY have alongside/on the Proving Grounds (gov't military land) you have a checkpoint...

To the East on I8, you have a constantly changing situation. The normal set up is at the base of the Yuma Foothills. But, the US Border Patrol are sometimes set up on the otherside of the hills. Sometimes, they are rolled out 40 or so miles by Tacna.

SWIM was just through this area in the last 7 days. SWIM rolled through, but Customs had the working dogs, car stopper (spike rails) out and 5 Border Patrol agents on the single lane, stop, check process.

This time they were over 70 some miles PAST Yuma. It is really sad IMHO.

For 'border patrol' they have the Barry Goldwater Military Res to the south. It runs from Yuma to almost Tucson. Alongside 95 to the North on the Proving Grounds, the military has a blimp. (unmanned). I saw an article years back that the blimp has the capability to read a dime on the border (70 miles away?). Also, due to the Lasers and Live Ammo/Ordinances used in the Proving Grounds and Barry Goldwater, the military, once again from an article SWIM read in Yuma, has equipment so sensitive in/on the land that it picks up dust devils (small dust funnels) in order to prevent an accidental civilian death. Americans have the right to travel, camp, 4wheel out onto Barry Goldwater.

I have unfortunately seen, on a couple of occasions, young kids (20's) college-age pulled aside after cruising down the road... and rolling up on a CUSTOMS check with full working dogs. It is sad.

I

SWIM hit "enter" B4 proofing and finishing. SWIM can't edit yet, so, to finish...

SWIM wonders about traveling elsewhere. Are there situations of this elsewhere on the southern border, or worse, in the middle upper part of the country?

SWIM warns SWIY about rolling through Yuma hot.

SWIM thinks the second border is due to the military in Yuma.

Oh, to the South, SWIY has Mexico! In Yuma, SWIM & SWIY are surrounded - Bcareful.

After going through a two stage (2 dogs each side) full stop, pull ahead, Q&A with two Border Patrol and being observed by a third... SWIM leaves Yuma like an angel.

This happens on a US Interstate (I8) 30-70 miles inside the US to US civilians and innocent travelers EVERYDAY.

Does this upset SWIY? It does SWIM. Esp knowing the tech the military has as mentioned above.

Oh, an SWIM knows SWIY that got pulled. Profiled. Dogs HIT. Complete car, purses, bags, clothing search. NOTHING! Did I mention that the Dogs HIT. oh, and Profile????

Good luck SWIY's. Bcareful in that neck of the woods.

that shits just fucked up.

Mix-up is all good; It takes a lot to upset SWIM!

SWIM was unsure where to post such an incident. It is a bust, but it is Law also.

SWIM doesn't care about stated artist as much as the second border issue.

Re: US Border Patrol - I8 - Lil' Wayne Bust

Lil Wayne is swim's favorite rapper, so that sucks. But jesus christ, running around Arizona with an ounce of cocaine? How stupid can you be? Especially riding around in the tour bus...its pretty common knowledge (or maybe even common myth, but still) that a high-profile artist + groupies + large party bus = drugs. But swim does think the "second border" and all that is bullshit.

And concerning drug dogs, swim thinks they are currently just a huge loophole in the constitution. Many times, like the topic-starter described, the dogs mistakenly hit on innocent people, causing them to be searched. So who's to say that when the dogs hit on a hot car, they are really smelling the drugs? Drug dogs are a way for the po-lice to bypass the fourth amendment, methinks. A drug dog "hit" should not be full probable cause; reasonable suspicion, maybe.

Kinda off-topic, but once swim's friend was pulled over by border patrol coming back from Mexico with a couple pounds of weed. Seeing the officer walking his dog up to the car, swim's friend frantically tore open a bag of Doritos on a whim and threw them in the back floorboard. Swim's friend was asked to step out, of course, and the officer led the dog around the vehicle. The dog hit, no surprise there, but when the officer opened the back door (where the dog hit), the dog immediately jumped in the car and began gorging on the Doritos! The officer was so mad at his dog that he pulled him out, began scolding him, and let swim's friend go. Swim doesn't know if the dog actually hit on the weed or the doritos lol, but it saved his friend's ass. Something to think about.

Rapper Indicted on Drug Charges

YUMA, Ariz. (AP) - A jury has indicted Lil Wayne on felony drug and weapons charges. The 25-year-old rapper, whose name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., was charged with one count each of possession of a narcotic drug for sale, possession of dangerous drugs, misconduct involving weapons and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the indictment.
Carter pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Friday.
His attorney, James Tilson, said Tuesday that Carter's tour would continue as scheduled.

Carter is due back in court March 7 for a status hearing.
The rapper's tour bus was stopped Jan. 22 at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Dateland, Ariz., 78 miles east of Yuma. Federal agents searched the bus and found nearly four ounces of marijuana, just over an ounce of cocaine, 41 grams of Ecstasy and miscellaneous drug paraphernalia, authorities said. Carter was then arrested.

Agents also found a .40-caliber pistol registered to Carter, who has a concealed weapons permit in Florida, officials said.
