US to waste $14M running anti-drug ads in Super Bowl

Will the spots run before or after the ads for Bud Light?

Beer : My anti-drug!!

Quote:
Fox to Run Teen Drug Ad During Super Bowl
John Consoli
Media Week
1.24.08

The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy will launch its first major national TV ad campaign to educate parents about teen prescription drug abuse by running an ad during the Feb. 3 Super Bowl telecast on Fox.

The entire campaign will include broadcast, print and online ads, which were put together in conjunction with the Partnership for a Drug Free America and created on a pro bono basis by media agency Draftfcb.

The campaign will involve $14 million in ad spending by the government, and the media will donate another $16 million.

Citizens, in my opinion, should have more control of where their tax dollars go. Send my taxes to support hunger relief efforts, please. A commercial? What a waste of money.

Here's my somewhat flippant take on this:

They'd damned well better come up with something really funny, like the This is you Brain on Drugs campaign, or that ad where some stoners going through a drive-thru restaurant run over some little kids in the process. The Stupid Bowl ads are all about entertainment. They're the only reason I even watch part of this stupid event!

well isn't this just crazy another example of the Gov. just throwing around money that we don't have on things that should be attended to in the home. Parents have a much better way of telling kids about the dangers of drugs then does any tv commercial.

I believe that the role of the parent is slowly being transfered from parents to the TV. Just another example of how we do what the man tells us too.

The irony of course being that the players on the field are so pumped full of the same pain killers that they're having seizures on the off-season from withdrawal.

Damn for a government that is going into a recession one would think they would spend their money a little more wisely. Stop wasting money one stupid bs like 14 million on ads. How many prevention programs could that pay for? How many students could they pay to go to college? These things in swibs opinion are better ways to prevent drugs use than an ad on TV. This and the war are just more reasons to show how stupid the US government is. For a free country “By the people and for the people” The people should have more of a choice for were there taxes go and how to live their own lives.

As much as I love the game, I have to agree with all the above comments. It is especially ironic if the campaign is going to target prescription drug abuse. Shit they might as well throw some anti-steriod bits in there as well.

Have these guys made any commercials before? Im interested in seeing what style the ad will be in.

Quote:
and cure us of america's worst burden
You cant cure stupidity so im assume your talking about the overwhelming presence of overweight people:

Quote:
The NPD estimate of the number of overweight Americans is similar to CDC findings that in 1999-2002, 65% were overweight or obese, up from 56% in the early 1990s and 47% in the late 1970s. About 31% of children are overweight or at risk of becoming so, the CDC says.
Now this poses a problem, Not only are americans overweight there also horrible lazy.In other words dont expect them to jump up and start exercising so this leaves us with one option: State sponsored liposuction.

America's worst burden? I can think of several.... Bush, the War on Drugs, a history of damaging and less than ethical military/economic/political interventions in other countries, Reagan, our dependency on oil, declining quality of the media, polarization and partisanship in the political discourse, big pharma and other vested interests, etc. etc.

The ad was just on. It was a skeezy-ass drug dealer wearing a wife-beater and an unbuttoned cheap looking shirt with greasy hair standing by a payphone on the corner of what I presume was a convenience store. He basically said something like

"Time's is tough, business is down by half. Ain't no one coming to drug dealers anymore, these kids today is getting high out of the medicine cabinet. Next time your kid gets messed up, don't blame me, more likely it was your drugs than my drugs."

Then a reassuring voice comes on and says "Safeguard your prescriptions, safeguard your teens." And it shows something that says "Parents: The Anti-Drug"

Yeah, this ad was really really stupid. It's a shame how they portray drug dealers.

Honestly, if kids get that image for a drug dealer, things will only get worse for them, because they won't even realize that they're doing drugs when their friends offer it to them.

Re: US to waste $14M running anti-drug ads in Super Bowl

Haha, here's the best part. The show they ran after the Super Bowl was House. For those who don't know, the show is basically about an asshole, pill-popping doctor and his team of doctors who solve medical mysteries.

Anyway the ad that ran right after the game (I believe during the post-game show), was for House, and literally the entire ad was nothing but various scens of House (the show is named after its main character, Dr. Greg House) throwing Vicodin into the air and chomping on them, while his co-workers gave him cutesy "C'mon House, don't do that" type of reactions, and/or House so high he was stumbling into things. The end of the ad showed the show's title followed by a dozen or so animated prescription pill bottles falling from the top of the screen.

All in all it made prescription pain killer use seem like more fun than a day at the amusement park.

Too bad they didn't have the sense to merely run a 10 second spot saying "tune in later for a dose of the joys of opiod abuse after the game." Such bare honesty might be more effective.

Re: US to waste $14M running anti-drug ads in Super Bowl

Well I agree that it is a huge waste of $14mil and incredibly ironic considering its aired next to beer commercials, looking on the bright side at least they are targeting prescription opiates and not things like cannabis, LSD ect. At least around where I live, quite a few lives are being destroyed by careless use of prescription drugs. And as obvious as it may seem to most of the people on this forum (opiates get you high and are addictive, really?!?), I'm sure it will make a few parents think twice about having them around the house. Unfortunately it was a very unfunny commercial, and isn't that what superbowl adds are supposed to be all about?

Re: US to waste $14M running anti-drug ads in Super Bowl

thats the only reason i watched the superbowl, for the commercials. and they were terrible this year. swim finds that pills are very scary, from ignorant dosers, the mixes of chemicals you want and dont want, and with pills especially like E, it's nearly impossible if it's authentic E or generic tylenol. medicine will be a bigger problem than we think in the near future
