Alright tomorrow night I'm going to a huge rave / party with my
buddies. I need to know what drugs I can and cannot do while I am on a MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor). Can anyone here help me out? -Hüsker Du |

if you want honesty, you shouldnt be doing ANY drugs while taking a perscription MAOI
for one specific one, taking MDMA while on an MAOI can result in death (serotonin syndrome, google for more info on it) |

I agree with Pyite
Being on an MAOI will amplify some types of drug you take, possibly to dangerous levels. What type of MAOI? Maybe you should have stopped taking it for your party... Safely you can still smoke weed, or drink a little. In theory you could do some tryptamines in low doses and have quite the ride. If you haven't experimented though, it might be hard to determine what kind of dose is for 'fun' and which is an intense personal experience. Be very cautious taking anything! You could die! I have no vested interest other than concern. Be Safe! -Dual |

I bet it's the more regular anti-depressant type of MAOI that targets MAO-B.. The only other anti-depressant MAO-A inhibitor I know of is Aurorex
Anyways, if it's a MAO-B inhibitor, you're going to have trouble finding something that's "safe".. Abstain from using anything actually while on MAO-B inhibitors, sorry. |

I just looked up serotonin syndrome and I smoke alot of weed...
The symptoms of the serotonin syndrome are: euphoria, drowsiness, sustained rapid eye movement, overreaction of the reflexes, rapid muscle contraction and relaxation in the ankle causing abnormal movements of the foot, clumsiness, restlessness, feeling drunk and dizzy, muscle contraction and relaxation in the jaw, sweating, intoxication, muscle twitching, rigidity, high body temperature, mental status changes were frequent (including confusion and hypomania - a "happy drunk" state), shivering, diarrhea, loss of consciousness and death. (The Serotonin Syndrome, AM J PSYCHIATRY, June 1991) When I get high off weed this is what happens: drowsiness, sustained rapid eye movement, overreaction of the reflexes, rapid muscle contraction and relaxation in the ankle causing abnormal movements of the foot, clumsiness, restlessness, feeling drunk and dizzy, muscle contraction and relaxation in the jaw, sweating, intoxication, muscle twitching, rigidity, mental status changes were frequent (including confusion and hypomania - a "happy drunk" state), shivering, loss of consciousness |

[From Erowid:]
Interactions Between MAOIs, SSRIs, and Recreational Drugs by Erowid

SSRIs Strong SSRIs are significantly more common than MAOIs. Many commonly prescribed pharmaceutical anti-depressants are SSRIs, including Prozac (Fluoxetine), Paxil (Paroxetine), Zoloft (Sertraline), Celexa (Citalopram), and Desyrel (Trazodone). MAOIs Strong MAOIs are less common, but include prescription anti-depressants like phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate), isocarboxazid (Marplan), l-deprenyl (Eldepryl), moclobemide (Aurorex or Manerix), furazolidone, and pargyline. Ayahuasca also contains MAOIs, generally in the form of Banisteriopsis caapi or Syrian rue (harmine and harmaline). [Original Here] --------------------------------------------------
Drugs to Avoid with MAOIs

It's not totally understood how various MAOIs interact with the body. Some are more likely to have negative interactions with foods and drugs than others. To be as safe as possible, avoid the following drugs while you are taking an MAOI antidepressant and for two weeks after stopping it.

All SSRIs (prozac, zoloft, and several other anti-depressants) SSRIs block the reuptake of serotonin in the brain. Because MAOIs inhibit the breakdown of serotonin, the combination of MAOIs and SSRIs can lead to dangerously high levels of serotonin in the brain (serotonin syndrome). Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include nausea, vomiting, blackouts, memory loss, increased blood pressure and increased heart rate.
Demerol
Cold preparations (tablets, capsules, or liquids such as Comtrex)
Cough medications containing decongestants, Dextromethorphan (DXM)1, or Demerol
Sinus medications
Nose drops or nasal sprays
Nasal decongestants
Hay fever medications
Diet pills
Amphetamines --- speed
MDMA --- Ecstasy
MDE, MDA, and other "MD" compounds
Cocaine --- crack
[/list] MAOIs can and will dramatically increase the effects of some of these drugs to the point of becoming dangerous. Other plants and chemicals are intentionally combined with some reversible MAOIs (plants such as Syrian Rue or Banisteriopsis Caapi, or their primary active chemicals the harmala alkaloids) to intentionally increase the effects of chemicals such as DMT (as is done in many forms of the ayahuasca brew) or sometimes phenethylamines such as Mescaline or 2-CB. All of these "potentiating" combinations can be dangerous if used improperly. [Original Here] |
