Will my anxiety be life long?
SWIM used ecstasy twice a month for 1 year. Then SWIM quit. Then SWIM used cocaine twice a month for 1 year.
Now SWIM has not used ecstasy for about 6 months and has not used cocaine for 2 months. However, SWIM now has some daily anxiety and will be seeking professional help soon. What are the stats...do these people usually have lifelong anxiety or is it temporary? SWIM is worried that he has done permanent damage to receptors in the brain. |

Re: Will my anxiety be life long?
Thats not really a lot of drugs.....swim thinks its doubtful that the drugs are completely to blame. Avoiding drugs in the future might be wise though. Depression can happen when someone subconsciously seems to convince themselves their life is shitty, and they seem to colour their world with this negative outlook.
Obviously getting professional help is the first and best step to take. There's a lot to be said for surrounding swiyself with positive people too. Also hobbies and passions will be a great way to help.....play music, jump out of planes, go see the world, or do what you gotta do to start making the most out of life again !!! Good luck with it !!! |

Re: Will my anxiety be life long?
SWIM does other things to keep from being anxious/ancy. He likes to go on long walks in the woods, hunting, sailing, and canoeing. He finds that if he can get himself to do these things it keeps his mind off of anxiety.

Re: Will my anxiety be life long?
Anxiety and depression are likely to dissipate as SWIY's clean time increases. That having been said, there is no reason to suffer from these afflictions in the meantime. NIK was prescribed Lexipro (which didn't work well) and Effexor (which worked) for a total of 18 months, including his first 9 months in recovery. NIK stopped taking SSRI/SSNIs in January of 2007 and has not had recurring problems with anxiety or depression since that time. He is very mindful of the fact that they could resurface at any time, and practices yoga, meditation, and attends 12-step meetings to maintain his serenity.
