The content of messages will not be retained, but information specifying who sent and received all e-mail and chat messages, the date and time, and the size of the message would have to be retained.
Internet protocol addresses, which define individual users or computers on the net, will also be retained. The directive would likely affect individuals and small to medium businesses, and not private business networks used by large multinationals.

Swim does not see the point of this. Seriously, it seems the only benefit the government obtains is the ability to see who contacted who and when the contact occurred. Maybe keeping track of criminals' social circles? Kinda like in the US when swim might be the target of an investigation because he was in a high-profile dealers' cell-phone address book? Is swim getting the gist of it?
And why would the directive only target individuals or small businesses? Why do the large corporations go unaffected? Plenty of illegal activities occur in large organizations that would make retaining their e-mail or chat messages useful. Hmmm...
Perhaps I'm missing the point of the directive?
