Re: With Melatonin: Please post them Here!

Sleep paralysis when the dose might have been a touch too high.
But other than that, it did appear that melatonin helps with sleep, although it has been awhile since SWIM has used it.

Re: With Melatonin: Please post them Here!

Some interesting side effects were reported as a comedown to daily use of diet pills including sleep paralysis and nasty, nasty nightmares (or so I've heard). However, the priestess has also taken up to 10 mg of melatonin without other substances and had the experience not of falling asleep or staying asleep any better but having a deeper sleep while still dreaming. Worth experimenting.

Re: With Melatonin: Please post them Here!

Swim has severe insomnia issues and anxiety.

Swim commonly took anywhere between 3mg and 60mg doses. About 4 out of 5 times, melatonin did absolutely nothing to help the actual issue. Larger doses caused drowsiness, flush feeling, blurry vision, mild mental fogginess. Sometimes it did help Swim sleep, possibly through placebo.

Overall, perhaps helpful for some, but Swim really did not find much use in it.

Re: With Melatonin: Please post them Here!

SWIM has been using a 10 mg dose of melatonin here and there. The next morning, it is hard for him to get up, but once he does, the initial grogginess is gone in a few minutes and after that, he feels nice and refreshed.

Another plus is they say that it helps with controlling eczema. Swim has a mild break out of eczema on his hands in the winter so he is curious to see how it turns out.

Re: With Melatonin: Please post them Here!

Melatonin and Clonazepam are nothing alike, at all, in potency. Melatonin is like drinking half a weak beer to get drunk.

Melatonin is way more placebo and suggestion, from all the Swims this Swim has talked to. Clonazepam actually does work. If Swiy needs to replace Kpins, melatonin probably won't do it.

Well the research suggests that Melatonin isn't placebo, so maybe swiy should adjust his expectations (by learning how it actually works and what it does for, its nothing like Clonazepam) and learn how to use Melatonin properly. Talking to friends is far from the most accurate way of discerning a substance's efficacy.

As for replacing Clonazepam with Melatonin, the two substances are extremely different and I don't see how this would work, though if one were to discontinue Clonazepam and get over the withdrawals and improve sleep hygiene I could see Melatonin then being used as a supplement to help maintain healthy sleep habits.

There is the main problem right there. Swiy was taking far too high doses of Melatonin for it to be really effective, except for messing with dreams perhaps. Studies found 3mg to be the upper end of the effective dose range, with 0.5mg being the most effective for a majority of patients.

Helping deal with the anxiety issue would also help.

Finally, Melatonin won't be that effective if one doesn't make efforts to improve their sleep hygiene, which is the root cause of insomnia (unless you don't have insomnia and have a long term sleeping disorder).

I dont know for sure about eczema, but SWIM's psoriasis definitely got a lot worse after about a week and a half of melatonin. I think it is advised not to take melatonin if you have an immune related dissorder and are using corticosteroids / immune regulators as it reduces their effectiveness by boosting the immune system. I wouldn't keeps my hopes up for it reducing an outbreak of eczema.

I know what clonazepam is like. It's weird shit. I've never had melatonin though. I'll probably get some soon to see if it helps. If not I'll call my doctor and BAM, prescription.

I didn't compare them. My doctor was just offering to put me on clonazepam to help with sleep. benzo =/= natural chemical produced in pineal gland.

I'm not THAT stupid ...I am when it comes to the chemistry forums though

I hate not having the edit button.

I definitely don't want to rely on clonazepam for sleep though. It's habit-forming as is, so using it every day for such a need is just asking for trouble. It makes me feel FUBAR and gives me good sleep and gets me to sleep but leaves me tired afterwards. Melatonin better work.

Edit: haha, i can edit now. 20 posts to become silver i guess. sweet.

Re: With Melatonin: Please post them Here!

yeah, one should not seek help in benzos etc as a regular sleep aid, rather try other stuff, herbal (baldrian), melatonin or doxylaminsuccinat/dph/dme and also keep up a good sleep-hygiene, ie. going to bed at a healthy time, not eating right before sleeping, sleeping enouhg but not too much, not smoking too much thc etc etc

btw you should be able to edit posts now, you have enough reputation points

I'll look into baldrian and the other thingies there that I've never heard of.

I've been falling asleep around 4a.m. lately haha. Last night I feel asleep at 10p.m. but I woke up at 2a.m. and couldn't go back to sleep. I even had some chamomile tea and it didn't help. School starts next week and I don't want to have that "nice" sleep deprived look.

...and I still can't edit

Re: With Melatonin: Please post them Here!

well a "friend" has eczema but he neither experienced a improvement nor any outbreaks related to melatonin or any other drugs he used (but he always uses them in moderation ..)

acutally, if at all, his overall drug use improved his symptoms since it has gotten a lot better the past few years, but that might also be related to the ending of adolescence

Re: With Melatonin: Please post them Here!

SWIM has had two excellent experiences with melatonin in the last two weeks. He bit a 3mg tablet in half on each occasion (each at least a week apart), let it sit under the tongue for at least 5 minutes and was able to fall asleep within 25 minutes each time and he slept well. SWIM is pleased with these results

Re: With Melatonin: Please post them Here!

SWIM is a chronic insomniac due to having ADD and ADHD. SWIM has tried Melatonin, was prescribed things such as Clonodine, Ambien, Restoril, etc. most of his life. Upon running out, for the past year, he has taken Diphenhydramine, and has enjoyed it recreationally. Now, at the verge of insomnia setting in yet again (He has been up for 28 hours and is wide awake, and NOT dilusional at all), he has no Diphenhydramine, but has a bottle of Melatonin. He's taken these in moderate, but not high doses. He took his last two Diphenhydramine (50mg caplets... A SMALL portion of what he normally takes to sleep - no less than 150mg - and FAR from his recreational dose of 300mg), and he started to do some research on melatonin. He took 8 caplets of 300 micrograms/0.3mg each. This gave him a dose of about 3mg. Despite his high tolerance to many medicines, he did not want to take a risk, as he was combining two similar drugs, and has taken 5mg of melatonin alone before (it had little effect other than helping him stay asleep).

Unfortunately also, in response to other readers who are using things to "lucid dream", it is actually quite simple. SWIM has also been a Lucid Dreamer since he was a child. And if anybody is interested. They may contact me, and I'll try and get ahold of him so they can have info. However, despite all the research SWIM has done on lucid dreaming, and how some Dr.'s believe it has no ties to a symptom called "sleep paralysis"... SWIM believes that it may possibly be otherwise, as about 6 months ago he began having a "VERY horrid dream" in which he was awake, and could see a somewhat distorted image of the room surrounding him, and even sometimes if he was not sleeping alone, the person next to him, and everything, but he could not move... When he tried to talk, it was very hard to get anything out. Usually, in the circumstance though, due to his self training of lucid dreaming, he manages to calm himself down, and wake up. Almost a year since that started, and it still happens frequently.

An hour later, and SWIM has found a lot of useful information that helps ease his mind about many of his "problems" none which are truly harmful, and he believes that he will go smoke a cigarette. He barely even started to feel the effects, but they were a more mild state of mind, and certainly not the "dry mouth, throat, and difficulty swallowing" that many other over the counter products have given him.

SWIM thinks that after this cigarette, he's going to record some more metal, and relay me the results of his experience so I can post them tomorrow.

koqlb added 949 Minutes and 45 Seconds later...

SWIM gave me the report. He stated that the melatonin worked well. After falling asleep, he had very severely warped dreams... involving a hospital patient he was taken care of, and the strange burning because he was hungry for the blood that had splattered from the patient. But at the same time, he was a good man, regardless of his bloodlust, so he was concerned with taking care of the patient. All of a sudden, he states that there were other Vampires in the dream. They started to chase him, and rather than waking up, SWIM said he began lucid dreaming as he is very good at. He actually ran from the others, and even controlled his thoughts while in the dream of when to turn, and when to turn around and stay and fight certain individuals. It was a very interesting dream. Because all the while, he stated his throat burned (probably due to the natural dry mouth caused by the diphenhydramine in reality, though he would say because he was "thirsty"). Unfortunately, the dream was cut short not by a scary moment, or even a jar of his body, as he simply slept where he lay last night. After falling asleep at 6am, he woke up at 10:30am... 4.5 hours later. Of course, when he woke up, he walked straight to the coffee pot, poured the entire pot into his two large coffee cups, and drank them both. And even thereafter, it still took him over a good 3 hours to fully wake up. He was awake, but just groggy until the melatonin wore off. He would've slept, but the natural events of the household wouldn't let that happen (darn cleaning lady had to vaccum). SO he took care of his daily duties. and lounged around most of the day (probably not good for the body's natural necessary melatonin levels). Therefore, though tired, and after staying awake for 26 hours, then only getting 4.5 hours of sleep, and being awake for approximately another 18ish, he told me he was taking the melatonin again since he can get the sleep this evening. He does state however, that he is wanting to get some more diphenhydramine so he can sleep well again. But swim also thinks that may just be his mind telling him when his body is more than capable with proper melatonin levels. The life of a real musician must be a hard one! :P

Re: With Melatonin: Please post them Here!

Swim hates Melatonin. Swim has used 3mg on several occasions. Swim finds he is plunged into a half-awake, half-asleep state that he gets paralyzed in for hours on end. Swim gets stuck in a mind loop. It is extremely uncomfortable; one of the most uncomfortable things swim has ever felt. When he finally escapes this state he is immensely relieved.

Swim experiences a similar experience when smoking Cannabis and going to sleep but nothing on the level of Melatonin. All of swims friends absolutely adore Melatonin and use it on a regular basis to counteract insomnia. Does anyone else out there experience a mind loop effect from melatonin?

Swim used melatonin to get over his marijuana sleep dependency... very good, non-addictive, product.
