Question Has GBL disappeared completely in the US?

Just wondering, are there any products still sold in the US with large quantities of gbl, or have they all been forced off the market? Perhaps wholesale compounds or something? Or completely gone?

I'm not asking what they are ... I would never ask anybody to POST sources of such a thing on a PUBLIC forum that FORBIDS that information (for good reason.) I'm just asking if any of them are still out there.

I just wonder if they are PrimarilyMotivated to completely obliterate this chemical from US shores.

Always skirting the issue!

No responses at all ... so I take it the stuff is completely gone.

Oh well. No harm in having asked.

Re: Has GBL disappeared completely in the US?

GBL is an industrial chemical, so it won't "disappear". However, the DEA has imposed a zero-kilogram threshold on it, with an exemption for transactions over 4,000 Kg in a single container. Here is the summary:

Quote:
Establishment of a Threshold for Gamma-Butyrolactone

AGENCY: Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Justice.

ACTION: Final rule.

SUMMARY: On October 24, 2001, DEA published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking titled "Establishment of a Threshold for Gamma- Butyrolactone'' (66 FR 53746) that proposed a zero kilogram threshold and the exemption of transactions of 16,000 kilograms (net weight) or more in a single container. This final rule establishes a zero kilogram threshold for domestic, export, and import transactions of gamma- butyrolactone (GBL) and excludes from the definition of a "regulated transaction'' all transactions of 4,000 kilograms (net weight) or more in a single container. The DEA is reducing the weight required for exclusion from what was proposed in response to a comment that showed that transactions of 4,000 kilograms or more in a single container are not likely to be diverted.

EFFECTIVE DATE: This final rule is effective October 10, 2003.
So it's not going to be available in containers less than 4,000 Kg (I guess that's a small tanker truck).

Re: Has GBL disappeared completely in the US?

Although this is not the chemistry section : the oxidation of THF into butyrolactone is a classic.
