Tramadol for opiate withdrawal

Hi all, swim has been on heroin for the past 6-8 months, and is trying to quit. He had pretty bad physical withdrawals for a day, so he decided to take Tramadol. The Tramadol seemed to take care of withdrawals almost completely. He's been on Tramadol for a couple days now, with almost no withdrawals. Swim was wondering if he took the Tramadol for a couple weeks, then stopped, if he would still have the opiate withdrawals. Is he just substituting one drug for another? Is he just going further into addiction? Any experiences or suggestions would be great!

Re: Tramadol for opiate withdrawal

Tramadol is also an opiate, so yes you will still have withdrawals from it. But it will probably be easier to quit tram than to quit heroin.

Take lower and lower doses of tram before completely stopping.

Re: Tramadol for opiate withdrawal

The tramadol will be easier to quit. One recent study concludes that tramadol is considerably more efficacious than buprenorphine for treating serious opioid addictions. I wouldn't be surprised if some mod asks me to back up my "controversial" statement, above, lol)
