While cleaning out a barn today, I happened across a box full of old veterinary supplies. Among the various antibacterials, syringes, and swabs, I found a little bottle with about30mL of yellowish fluidlabeled "Ketaset", aka Ketamine. Woohoo! I've got a couple of questions. First and foremost, I'd like to know if this stuff is safe. It's from 1981 =( .I'm guessing that it's a bit past its prime, but I don't know anything about K, soooo...maybethere's a chance that it's still good? Yes? Please!? Also, if it is still safe to use, can I take it orally? And in what dosage? I appreciate any advice anyone can give me. Please note that the safety thing is a big deal, so if you don't know, don't guess! |

i'm no chemist. so don't know whether it'll have broken down into anything really nasty, but please do not drink it, even if you find out it's safe!
Ketamine is a dissociative anaesthetic, and anaesthatises from the point of ingestion. so if you swallow it, it anaesthatises and dissociates your body first. By the time it hits your brain most of the effect has been absorbed by your body, leaving your body uncoordinated and your brain very confused and uncomfortable. It's not fun! Some people swear by I.M. injection, but the safest way to take K is insufflation (snorting). Be careful. It's a) very moorish, and b) can take you to some very strange places! Treat with respect and in small doses, K can be a lot of fun with some good friends, nice tunes and some duvets! The best thing to do with it would be to pour a vial onto a plate and let the liquid evaporate. No fancy extraction needed, just keep it in a warm, dry environment. It'll dry into a white crystalline powder, which is best snorted.Allegedly. This might take a couple of days, during which you've got time to find out if it's still safe to take. keep watching this thread, and do a bit of searching yerself. Sorry I can't be more help on the usability, but please don't do anything apart from dry it until you've found out a bit more. Potentially a very good find though...

If you're still watching the thread, I've done a bit of digging around, and so far as I can see Ketamine is pretty stable, if it's stored away from the light and away from oxidising agents. There appears to be no harmful polymerisation, but there is a chance that it may have some C, CO2 and sulpherisation, although the chances are that that would occur in the solution rather than the actual ketamine, but still be wary, especially seeing as it's over 20 years old. Maybe one of the chem wizards can give a bit more info?
Personally, given it's age, I wouldn't touch it, and injecting it is definitely out of the question so far as the age goes. Again, be careful... |

Thanks for your suggestions and the infor, Mickle. You're absolutely right, there's no way I would inject this stuff, or even ingest it at this point. I'm toying with the idea of drying some out and giving it a shot, but I'm pretty wary. 20+ years is quite a long time, and although it appears it's been stored away from the light and in a relatively dry environment, it seems risky. I think I will dry it out, but whether I do it or not is still up in the air. (I know I will, I just don't know that yet, so don't tell me.) However it goes, I'll be sure to report back here. Thanks again for your response, you've been most helpful.

Well, not that I'm telling you to, but I'd dry it out and see what it looks like.
Sound like the conditions it was in were pretty good. Let us know.
