Pandora internet radio is a free internet radio station that you can personally customize. You input songs or artists you enjoy and it plays tunes that are similar. Works really well for reggae, hip hop, funk. it's tricky for eclectic rock or eclectic music in general.
Great resource. Pandora operates through the music genome project which aims to "capture the essence of music at the fundamental level" using over 400 attributes to describe songs and a complex mathematical algorithm to organize them. -Wiki

concerning the music genome project, a given song is represented by a vector containing approximately 150 genes. Each gene corresponds to a characteristic of the music, for example, gender of lead vocalist, level of distortion on the electric guitar, type of background vocals, etc. Rock and pop songs have 150 genes, rap songs have 350, and jazz songs have approximately 400. -wiki

Pandora closed its door to non-US listeners long ago. I use http://www.last.fm/ nowadays. I think it's slightly better as well. It's more customizable, better options etc.

That's no good that the pandora is like that. Yea I had the last.fm program and quickly deleted it.

Both Pandora and Last.fm operate through the music genome project.
