SWIM's friend wants to be a cop...
Lets say a close friend, relative or loved one of yours has decided to join the police force. They have never done an illegal drug but have been drunk and do drink. Marijuana has been offered to them to which they reply 'I don't do drugs.'
What kind of conversation would you try to have with this person, specifically what key facts would you raise and what would you want to point out if you wanted them to be more drug-user friendly cop? The individual has mentioned that he thinks arresting pot smokers is a waste of time, but SWIM is skeptical about his knowledge about any drugs. And if he's not particularly interested in them, then how to go about this, in hopes that he might become a positive force on the inside? SWIM doubts his friend would rat or arrest him for drug use and the officer wannabe already knows that SWIM has used drugs... SWIM is thinking of pointing out some of the injustice of the current system and the futility of the drug war and if SWIM can maintain his friend's attention he may try explain some of the effects and risks and recommend some literature or websites that would offer different information from the propaganda he has likely faced in the media and at school. SWIM would very much like to maintain the friendship even if his friend does decide to be a hard-ass regarding drugs. Please imagine that SWIY's friend/family/loved one has these law enforcement ambitions. What would SWIY do? |

Re: SWIM's friend wants to be a cop...
Just having a conversation about how alcohol and cigarettes are the two most dangerous drugs usually makes even the biggest idiot realize that on some level the laws against drugs are unjust and hypocritical.

Re: SWIM's friend wants to be a cop...
maybe take him out for a night with some friends, plan this out before hand, but mention the fact he wants to be a cop then have your friends start acting secretive around him or maybe they all of a sudden have a change of plans and ditch you/him for the night.explain that this is because there not sure if they can trust him or dont know how to act around someone who might become a cop, maybe this would show him that people would trust him less as a cop.i know its not the most honest thing to do to ones friend but drastic times call for drastic measures.
i have a friend who once was training to become LE,it didint change my friendship or my level of honesty with him at all,he knew everything i did and i trusted him regardless of his career choice. |

Re: SWIM's friend wants to be a cop...
Pointing sites like DF and erowid and MAPS out to him, specifically threads that "reasonable" "normal" people would see as non-destructive and informative (i.e. harvard's burgeoning interest in psychedelic therapy & MDMA for PTSD, medical marihuana, -- non-recreational use, basically, to start) might be better than face-to-face to begin with. He can begin to think about the issues on his own and not feel he has to be on the defensive, as in a conversation (which may easily turn into an argument that would have the opposite effect).

Re: SWIM's friend wants to be a cop...
SWIM can share the sites but inspiring him to read them could be a problem. Perhaps SWIM will suggest it will give him an advantage on the force as many officers are probably not familiar with some of the more exotic substances featured on these sites. Good idea, SWIM sends his thanks.
