old wine? Safe to drink?

SWIM's sister has had some old wine sitting around (I think open) for a "few months" (so she says) and asked if it was safe to drink..

it's cheap wine so if not it doesn't really matter but she asked SWIM so I figured I'd try and find out for her..

Re: old wine?

Open for more than 48 hours? Ditch it, it'll have oxidised at the very least and turned to vinegar/grown new and exciting moulds at worst. It will certainly taste like shit.

Even unopened, cheap wine, ie: most wine bought from supermarkets/off licenses should be drunk within a year at most: The wine is bottled at the stage of development when it's supposed to be drunk, and keeping it for longer wont improve it.

"Laying Down" wine (buying wine specifically to mature and improve in the bottle with age) is a complicated business that the flamingo knows very little about.
