E + Mono (Glandular Fever)

So, I'm just gonna cut right to the chase and not give you back story to bore you all. Jack Rabbit emailed me this -

Quote:
I've got a minor case of mono. I am experiencing almost no symptoms of it (other than the occasional sore throat and swollen glands.) I am wondering if I should be worried about doing E? I know it's most likely not the best idea, but am I going to keel over and die?
Thoughts?

Thanks.

Re: E + Mono

Can't wait because the opportunity doesn't often arise that he can do it. I'm not too worried about him feeling like shit, He's taken that into consideration already. I know you're not suppose to drink while you have mono because it irritates the already irritates liver, so I figure doing E is no different?

I guess I've answered my own question possibly?

Re: E + Mono

Quote:
Infectious mononucleosis, (also known as the kissing disease, or Pfeiffer's disease, in North America as mono and more commonly known as glandular fever in other English-speaking countries) is seen most commonly in adolescents and young adults, characterized in teenagers by fever, sore throat, muscle soreness, and fatigue...Mononucleosis is usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which infects B cells (B-lymphocytes), producing a reactive lymphocytosis and atypical T cells (T-lymphocytes) known as Downey bodies...The disease is so-named because the count of mononuclear leukocytes (white blood cells with a one-lobed nucleus) rises significantly. There are two main types of mononuclear leukocytes: monocytes and lymphocytes. They normally account for about 35% of all white blood cells. With infectious mononucleosis, this can rise to 50-70%. Also, the total white blood count may increase to 10,000-20,000 per cubic millimeter...

Mononucleosis can cause the spleen to swell. Rupture may occur without trauma, but impact to the spleen is also a factor. Other complications include hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) causing elevation of serum bilirubin (in approximately 40% of patients), jaundice (approximately 5% of cases), and anemia (a deficiency of red blood cells). In rare cases, death may result from severe hepatitis or splenic rupture.

infectious mononucleosis is generally self-limiting and only symptomatic and/or supportive treatments are used.[3] Rest is recommended during the acute phase of the infection, but activity should be resumed once acute symptoms have resolved. Nevertheless heavy physical activity and contact sports should be avoided to abrogate the risk of splenic rupture, for at least one month following initial infection and until splenomegaly has resolved, as determined by ultrasound scan. -Wikipedia
From what SWIM knows of mono and from what Wikipedia states, SWIM thinks Barracks will most likely be fine, although Barracks' throat probably wont be very happy in the morning...

Also, if Wikipedia is to be believed, SWIM would avoid heavy physical activity and contact sports whilst rolling. Unless Barracks wants a ruptured spleen. That sounds pleasant.

Agreed with both points. One tends to give one's throat quite a workout on MDMA with sucking motions, etc., and my buddy Eddie who uses MDMA on occasion reports that his tongue/upper throat/back of mouth is often rather sore the next day due to this. It goes along with the bruxism (jaw clenching).

Also, anecdotally, ailments like flu, colds, etc. can get worse after MDMA use, I suspect from generally overusing and wearing down one's energy rather than resting as one should, as well as MDMA's effects on body temperature regulation. I'd really suggest just waiting although it sounds like SWIY is intent on this.

Re: E + Mono

Yes, mono would provide stress on the immune system and if many hours of dancing and activity were planned for SWIY's voyage with ecstasy then your immune system could be further compromised temporarily I'd imagine. In all honesty it doesn't seem like you'll be harming yourself as long as your don't pull a Harry Houdini and let someone punch you in the gut (only hitting your spleen instead of causing an appendicitis).

Re: E + Mono

Personally I wouldn't do it if SWIY is already sick. Some studies have suggested that ecstasy temporarily suppresses the immune system so SWIY's condition could deteriorate. However, if there is no way of changing your mind and you are dead set about dropping then I recommend loading up on vitamins and supplements, try not to overdo it while you are rolling (not too much dancing etc.) and get some good rest after.

Re: E + Mono

SWIM doesn't really plan on dancing or partying, it was never his thing. SWIM just plans on sitting around with his friends and playing Nintendo Wii and listening to some ambiance music. SWIM has come to the conclusion that if he keeps hydrated, his liver should be fine.

Not to mention that ecstasy makes users want to touch and feel a lot of different things, which increases the users' chance of another infection.
