Culture - Womens Jail?

Swim was kicing back with a spliff with a friend talking about womans jails, two of which who havent been in jail but was pondering 'Are womens jails much worse then male jails?' also is all the horrible stories that ppl hear true?

Is there any female (or male) swimmers who would like to share thier opinion regarding womens jails?

I'm interested to here some stories from women who have been to prison. Women can be and are ruthless so I can imagine that much of the same things go on as in male prisons.

Edit: I guess you are talking about jail though, might not be as severe.

my understanding at least in my area is the woman are generally much nicer to each other then the males,and what horror stories do you speak of?rape is uncommon in county jails its more of a prison thing and even then not that common(at least in maine)consensual sex is a different story....

My ferret visited a prison in his city with a female wing, whatever about how inmates treat each other, there was a marked difference in the facilities/sanitation. The womens cells were well built, warm, well furnished, better than some flats I've been in, the mens on the other hand were horrible, the place smelled like shit, they were much smaller, colder ect.

the guards also treat the woman alot better.

depends where, probably. for having worked (not as part of the prison staff, cultural related work) in male and female detention centers, swim would just say the tensions are very different. not better or worse. less physical violence, but other nasy things as well. security is generally less strict because of this. los of psychological tension, jealousy, depression, verbal agressivity, and cliques and leaders in the female wings as well. again, swim finds that the main difference is less use of physical violence, although it does happen of course.
as for female wardens . swim has seen some that would use very aggressive body language, military style orders etc and others that used different, friendlier, more personnal attitudes when interacting with the inmates. in male facilities, the "strict, but eventually human" seemed to be the norm.
cells were the same, but female inmates tended to be moved around less, as they were less numerous. The female wing, with less inmates, had a feeling of being more attended to, which makes sense with less movement and inmates.

@bajeda here in maine woman/men work in both the males/female wings of the jail.

@beentheredonethatagain IMHO woman may find them selfs in lesbian relationships easier because alot of them dont put the same stigmas on same sex relations men do alot of woman who do have homosexual sex dont do it for the same reasons men do they do it more as friends/for fun.not to stereotype anyone but this has been my understanding with several of my ex girlfriends who have explained this to me.

The thing I don't understand too clearly , Women can go alot longer without sex than men.

I am uptight if things arent being taken care of in the sex dept. , for the way that thing works, it can really be a load. ( no pun intended )

The women I have had the honor of knowing, tell of being able to go without for long periods.

But it is known well that when they get in the jail system , even for short periods of time, they go for it.

I have never known or seen straight Men flip that way in Jail, in prison I'm sure is different, I guess because thanks to not getting in that kind of trouble, this swim hasnt beenthereordonethat.

He served 4yrs 6months out of a 8yr sentence

I have a male friend currently doing his 9th year on a 6 year sentence. They say he is too violent and dangerous to get out and so they will not let him go even though he has served more than his maximum sentence. He was my best friend on the yard at a co-ed facility. I had yet to be convicted but they put us together-we went to yard together for months.

I don't see how that explains the reason why women are so quik to jump into another womans bunk.

I LIKE the comparison, it worked.
Hard to picture a male with those adjectives, but when I used them to picture a female, I was attracted to what I imagined, except for the one that said "lazy" , lazy is no turn on.

Swim now has a better understanding, thankyou.

Honestly, swim could'nt comment on switching from Hetro to Bi (or whatever!) in such a situation until one has experienced it.

swim was in jail, terrifying at first, kept head down and mouth shut, after sentencing got into the kitchens working done loads of stuff towards NVQ, resat English and Maths Gcse and sorted swims head out as to lifestyle. Now swim is halfway through degree in Uni, volunteering for drug services in local area, settled into a relationship and living what could be called a 'normal life'

The main difference between them that I know of, other than the guard rape issue, is that in women's facilities the race question is not much of a problem whereas in the male facilities the racial protocals must be adhered to strictly.

Although, from the guard's perspective, he told me the difference for him is that women follow orders much better.

wow. where swim is male guards are not allowed to enter female facilities, unless it's an emergency situation, such as a riot etc...
all male "visitors", doctors, workers must fill in a form. The prison personnel is strictly female. the reverse, however, is not true, and there is female staff working in the male areas.
there is no "racial" protocol, all ethnicities are mixed in both facilities--- only people kept isolated are inmates convicted of sexual crimes, especially pedophilia issues, as they get attacked by inmates a lot.
I guess detention facilities and conditions really vary a lot from countries and states to another. The place were swim worked the most was considered "the first modern prison", and was used as a sructural model for building the north american Alcatraz detention facility. it's old, and strict for the country. it's also a training ground for prison guards.

I have been in jails and have known a few females who were sent to either county jail and or prison. Please dont take what I am about to say as mean or sexist, women go to jail and find themselves in lesbian relationships much quicker.

I would never post anything like that unless I had a lot of knowledge of it being true.

I think a great deal of the ease of the switch is what you are switching to. For a woman to 'switch' to male/dominance is okay, we do it temporarily in our lives all the time and besides that, being 'dominant' is a step up.

for a man to turn 'female' is maybe more of a step down (to some).

to some<this can apply more readily to those who do not have physical dominance issues at all. And so switching would be/is more widespread among women because we don't generally compete in way that is linked to my show of physical strength.

come on. talking about women's prisons is just a bit more than an academic arousal, admit it.

and in that vein, i will mention that if women, as a class, do get by without sex better, idk; but i can say that heterosexual women who do seek sex in prison are not going to have available what they 'really' want. whereas for a man in prison, his needs may be more closely met by the anatomy he finds if he goes seeking.

here there can be wings that are mostly one race or another, but actually i was referring to what is allowed in mixed areas. Like a white man is not allowed to use the same exercise equipment that the black ones do or to accept a gift like a cup of coffee. If he does, he will quickly be checked by the Aryan Brotherhood and made to pour the coffee out or whatever.

Think so? I grew up in schools where white is a minority and i have never noticed. although black people ARE a little loud when they play dominoes.

I disagree that the reason that women slide into lesbian relationships easier is due to socail stigma; I think it's because males and females are wired differently W/R/T sex. I know I've been in a situation where the easiest opiton would have been homosexual sex and had to inconveniently back out due to lack of arousal. It seems to me (and is the current thoery in the field) that women are capable of responding sexually to a broader range of stimuli than men.

Also, the thing about race during SWIM's brief stay in jail (and in school when he grew up) wasn't so much that he'd stick to the whites because he was racist; it was more that it'd be imposing on them--messing around with "their thing." Almost like a lack of respect.

i am not recommending to do this in jail necessarily since that is an unnatural environment. but otherwise go ahead and get in on that "thing" if you feel the urge. i have had either approach work>either acknowledging an awareness of/liking for the color difference or just completely ignore it even if you think you see it in the eyes of 'them'. they will get over it shortly even if they did have the twinge that many of us get when something new happens.
