Urgent Advice Needed! How long do San Pedro cuttings survive?
SWIM hast just received one 500g and one 1000g cuttings (i.e. full cacti) of the sacred cactus but cannot pot them for a couple of days. How long will they survive in their mutilated state, and what's the best way to store them?
Thanks. |

Re: Urgent Advice Needed! How long do San Pedro cuttings survive?
San Pedro cacti are a wildly strong species, and pieces without water or rooting can be planted months after being removed from the cacti with reasonably positive results. SWIY shouldnt worry about a few days....
On another note, struggling cacti have been shown to produce much higher alkaloid content. Many recommend starving their cactus of water for 8-10 months before harvesting. |

Thanks for your reply. I've head about the starving method. So this means absolutely no water AT ALL?
Does anyone know what a good temperature is for the stress conditions, and how much light? |

Light should be kept at 12/12, photosynthesis is still necessary. SWIM has found no potency difference in different temperature climates, although in colder weather swim has had only indoor cacti around 68-70f, and farther south has had only outdoor cacti around with usual variance in temperatures between 45-105f over the course of the year, same soil mix however.

1000 overall watts should be sufficient for 2 or more collective feet of cacti. Multiple lights however, spreading out the concentration of lumens, will increase growth as well as dehydration.

A cactus grower from Arizona recommends the grower wait four to five weeks before putting the cutting into dirt.
