Re: Dumb Cane?

I can think of a few occasions where a dose of this could be judiciously administered, but can see no recreational value for the humble Dieffenbachia.

As well as being poisonous to cats & small children, it was used by slavers to silence unruly slaves, & apparently also considered for a time by the Nazi's as a chemical castration in the Death Camps...

A pretty plant, but otherwise useless (unless torture or sterilisation is your bag!).

Re: Dumb Cane?

Your gecko can't mean this...

"Common names Dumbcane, Giant Dumbcane, Spotted Dumbcane, Leopard Lily
Botanical name Dieffenbachia sp.
Poisonous parts All parts
Toxins Calcium oxalate
NotesThe distinctive leaf pattern of the very popular Dieffenbachia sp. is seen in many homes. Painful and immediate swelling of the mouth and throat occurs after chewing on dumbcane. Speech impediment can occur, sometimes lasting for several days. Avoid eye contact with the juices which can result in intense pain and swelling.

This plant is useful for purifying our indoor air."

Doesn't sound much fun

Re: Dumb Cane?

yes grandma is quite aware of its effects and while they dont sound fun granmda goes several days as it is without talking to other humans, and wants to experience this she thinks it would be quite interesting/a teaching experience to not be able to use her voicebox.once her and a old roommate went 1 entire week without communicating during a extended meditative session(they were also on dxm the whole time..)

Re: Dumb Cane?

One thing I can say is that this plant is virtually un-killable. We have had one for about 15 years, and over those years it has seen some periods of serious neglect.

Not bad, huh?

Aye, silence can indeed be golden! The point of using it as a meditative tool is the discipline involved in not communicating, & done properly that includes any & all forms of communication. Not only would using Dieffenbachia be uncomfortable & potentially dangerous, it'd be cheating!

Re: Dumb Cane?

So other than the forced silence, does this have any other recreational or spiritual benefits that any SWIY's can think of? It sounds not only painful and uncomfortable, but kind of superfluous and unnecessary. Is the meditational side of the experience the only thing SWIY is interested in or are there other parts of the experience that seem worthwhile?

Either way, would SWIY be kind enough to post a trip report if they try this, SWIM is pretty interested in what happens.

Good luck and safe tripping.

Re: Dumb Cane?

Has SWIY looked into other methods of inducing muteness? SWIM knows of none, but there must be a safer alternative. This plant just seems dangerous, what SWIY seeks is understandable, but SWIM would hate to see SWIY get hurt trying something that is just not meant to be tried.

Has SWIY simply tried sober meditation? No dumb cane, no dissociatives, no psychedelics, just plain meditation? Sometimes that is when SWIM gets the best epiphanies and most calming of thoughts.

SWIM has also tried going mute for a while, though his attempts have been while using nothing more than marijuana. It can be interesting and sometimes fun and quite enlightening, so SWIM definitely sees where SWIY is coming from.

Re: Dumb Cane?

granmda says: yes im sure there are safer alternative but that takes away some of the experience, every other option would give me the choice to speak, thats not something i want i want to know what its like to be a mute and still try and function in society.

and yes grandma has tried sober meditation all the time.

Get yourself a ball gag.

Seriously, ever heard of anaphylactic shock? All those little peanut-allergy kids die of suffocation because their throats swell shut before teacher finds kid's epinephrine pen shoved up his nose.
