Katy French still seriously ill in Navan Hospital

For those of you who are unaware, Katy French is an Irish 'super' model. Once again thoughts are with her family and friends and it is hoped that she can make a recovery. Although little is being said, speculation is rife that this is down to cocaine (what with the situation in Waterford, this has sent the media into a frenzy).

Katy French still seriously ill in Navan Hospital

Wednesday December 05 2007

Model Katy French remains seriously ill in hospital following her collapse at a party in Co Meath over the weekend.

The HSE confirmed this morning that there was no change in the 24-year-old's condition overnight.
She is understood to be on a life-support machine.
The model was rushed to Navan Hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning after falling ill at a house party in Ashbourne.
No information has been disclosed about the cause of her collapse, but media reports say she suffered a series of heart attacks.

She's now dead. This should brew a media storm.

Model Katy French dies in hospital
Thursday, 6 December 2007 23:27
24-year-old model Katy French has died at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, Co Meath this evening.
In a statement, her family said that Katy had passed away peacefully in the arms of her sister Jill and alongside her Mum and Dad.
Ms French was rushed to hospital in the early hours of last Sunday morning after she collapsed in a friends house in Kilmessin in Co. Meath.

Her family said it had been 'overwhelmed by the letters, blessings, gifts and prayers from people all over the country'.
The statement also said, 'we hope that you can continue to send your love to her as she journeys on'.
Her family thanked the public for prayers and support and especially all the staff in Navan Hospital.
Gardaí have confirmed that they are continuing their enquiries into Ms French's hospitalisation and are awaiting the results of a post-mortem.
It is understood Ms French's family were in contact with Gardaí and are anxious to find out what happened to her.
Gardaí have spoken to some of her friends to try and establish what happened and who she was with before she fell ill.
It is understood there were three people in the house at the time she collapsed and that there was not a party being held there as had previously been reported.
The Coroners Office has been informed of her death.
The post mortem examination on the body of Katy French is to take place tomorrow afternoon at Our Lady's Hospital in Navan.
The examination will be conducted by a pathologist from the State Pathologists Office.
It is hoped that the results will answer questions about the cause of the 24-year-old's sudden illness and death.

I may be mistaken, but was this originally reported as cocaine related? Thought I heard that on the radio. Seems they've dropped that theory for the moment? Maybe im confused with the "cocaine related" death in waterford?

No, you are not mistaken and that is still the current thinking on the matter. Another sad story and our thoughts have to be again with her family and friends. This is not the time for political point scoring, but SWINB is correct in his prediction of a media storm (and more than likely a political one too). Let's hope the matter is dealt with in a level headed way (however unlikely that may be).

This from The Irish Independent:

Katy French dies in hospital

By Gary Fennelly
Thursday December 06 2007

One of Ireland's top models, Katy French, has died in hospital after collapsing at a house last weekend.
The 24-year-old had been in a coma since she fell ill at the weekend. A statement from her family said she died in the arms of her sister Jill with her mother and father alongside.
A post mortem examination will be carried out at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, where Ms French died before 7pm.
In the statement her family said: "Katy has passed away peacefully in the arms of her sister Jill and alongside her Mum and Dad.

"Her family thanks everyone so much for all the prayers and support and especially all the staff in Navan Hospital who gave her special care and attention throughout.

"We have been overwhelmed by the letters, blessings, gifts and prayers from people all over the country. It gave us strength and helped Katy so much.

"Although we did not get our yearned for miracle, all the expressions of love you sent her were powerfully healing in different ways."
It concluded: "We hope that you can continue to send your love to her as she journeys on."

Initial reports claimed that Ms French collapsed at a house party in Ashbourne, County Meath, in the early hours of Sunday morning and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance.
But press reports today claim that she was visiting friends at a house in Kilmessan, several miles from Ashbourne, when she was suddenly taken ill.
Gardai said an investigation was underway into the circumstances of her death, while a post-mortem is awaited.
Paying tribute to Ms French, a statement from the Irish charity GOAL said: "Katy French visited Calcutta at the request of GOAL some months ago and left an indelible impression.
"She showed herself to be a caring, warm, and deeply emotional person during her time with street children, child prostitutes, slum and city dwellers.
"Those whom she touched with her kindness and concern loved her.
"All of us in GOAL are deeply shocked at her untimely death and our thoughts and prayers are with Katy's family and relations."
Less than a year ago, Katy hit the headlines as she announced her engagement to wealthy restaurateur Marcus Sweeney was over.
The couple famously broke up during a row at his Dublin eatery while she was in the midst of a lingerie modelling shoot for the Sunday Independent magazine.

In recent times the model has been snapped in the arms of "good friend" Calum Best, son of late Northern Ireland and Manchester United football icon George.

And her profile was boosted even further by a number of TV appearances, including a part in RTE's reality show Celebrities Go Wild.

She admitted to supporting abortion, which she claimed was the reason for her being the first person to be voted off RTE's survival reality show.

She was also in the spotlight recently for telling 'Hot Press' magazine that she would never touch hard drugs, but admitted to a tabloid newspaper several days later that she started taking cocaine at 19 years old, " and soon realised that it was very much part of the Dublin social scene".

She added: "Cocaine is everywhere but I just wanted to say that it's not cool, it's not attractive.

"I am speaking out because I feel we need to be more honest with ourselves, stop living in denial and take responsibility."

She insisted she had stopped using the drug.

Though she was born in Switzerland, Katy's family moved to Ireland when she was still young and settled in Enniskerry in County Wicklow.

After completing her Leaving Certificate she went on to study psychology but her future lay elsewhere and she signed up to Assets Modelling Agency.

In less than two years, she had become one of Ireland's best-known models and socialites.

What's with all the worrying? We all know our drugs policy is completely backwards, so far backwards that they've hit a wall and can't reverse any further. The journos can scribble their little articles in the Sunday Independent and housewives will tut and moan but people will still use cocaine regardless. This recent string of incidents demonstrate how sociologically stagnant prohibitionary drug policies are. A few people who have never used cocaine may think twice before using it but the vast core of users couldn't give a steaming turd. It's the third-rail issue. Politicians won't touch it with a yardstick, hell the issue isn't even addressed in those little political compass quizzes littered all over the internet anymore.

We live in the world of "drugs are bad, m'kay" and that won't change any time soon.

No worrying in these quarters and wouldn't disagree with anything you say, but it is very sad, both in terms of the loss of life and goverments (including all here) blinkered approach to drug legislation.

Most cocaine users my Ferret knows are making light of this, and the Waterford incident. I've heard the question " have you got any of the killer cocaine on ye?" asked by a few ppl, tasteless but what can you do!
