Adderall Causes Me to "Crash" hard...Anything Better??
I take Adderall 30mg Xr once a day. I like the benefits, however the crash at the end of the day is brutal sometimes. Are there any stimulants or anti depressants equal to adderall where people experience minimal "crashing"???

Firstly, self-incrimination is not permitted here. Nobody on this forum has taken or done anything illegal, but they may well know somebody that does or has. Use SWIM (Someone Who Isn't Me) or similar.
Secondly, this is the wrong forum for your question. There is an adderall forum. Thirdly, UTFSE and you will more than likely find the answer you are looking for. Finally, welcome aboard and please take a look at the following link which will answer a lot of questions that may arise about the forum and forum rules: http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37552 |

Swim takes modanifil(modafinil?) now instead of amphetamines or methylphenidate when he needs to study. It gets the job done for him with a much cleaner feeling and a much less harsh crash.

Sterling, I notice your three posts are the ones that pop up, is this an alternative spelling of the drug? Also...this should probably go in the adderall forum. |

Good eye trptamene...this is kind of strange. I never noticed it spelled modafinil before, but after looking through google I see both of them referenced a lot, even by articles. I actually found several where they used both terms in the same article, with no context to suggest it was anything different. It seems modafinil is used more though..in any case I just edited my previous posts by adding the other term in there for better searching.

I was confused about that as well. I always interpreted the self-incrimination rules as rules to prevent you from talking about breaking any law. Being prescribed a medication and talking about how you use it medicinally is not illegal, so I always assumed it wouldn't be against the rules on this forum. I may have asked a moderator to clarify once but I really don't remember. I just know I haven't been told not to talk directly about myself when it comes to legal issues.

Were they talking about themselves personally using it or just talking about chemistry or what?

and i've been prescribbed adderall and adderall xr and noticed a huge crash when the instant release adderall wore off and felt horrible but since my doctor put me on the adderall xr i've never noticed a crash at the end of the 8 or so hours it lasts. but you could try energy drinks or coffee. or if you are like me and have no problem sleeping on adderall talk to your doctor about getting a new prescription for 2 30mg a day and take a second one about 4-6 hours into your first one. |

As for using energy drinks and other stimulates to alleviate the crash of Adderall, I would have to disagree with that recommendation. This isn't very different from just continuing to take the Adderall itself to offset the crash. Of course stimulants you buy in convenience stores aren't nearly as powerful, but they're providing the same basic function of preventing your body to return to a non-intoxicated state and replenish neurotransmitters that are used in the mechanism of action associated with Adderall. My recommendation would be, as mentioned by VashYsk, exploring different dosing with your doctor. In addition, it isn't uncommon for doctors to provide additional medication for relieving the comedown if Adderall works the best for their patient. Benzodiazepines are frequenlt prescribed for, at the very least, treatment of the anxiety and uncomfortable state of being unable to relax associated with an Adderall crash so you can sleep. Other medications are used as well, so benzodiazepines aren't the only option if you want to continue to use Adderall. A muscle relaxant at the very least will alleviate a lot of the stress. Even if you don't want to use a prescription muscle relaxant, the antihistamine diphenhydramine which is available OTC generically and in the form of the brand Benadryl, is a muscle relaxant (although not as powerful as a prescription one). They'll make you sleepy and relaxed though because they're marketed as sleep-aids. Finally you might want to look into Modafinal if you are more concerned with the stimulation and energy Adderall gives you than the concentration. Modafinal is a central nervous stimulant as well, but generally has no bothersome side-effects, and no crash. The only side effect, for most patients, is feeling like they got a great night of sleep. |

Re: Adderall Causes Me to "Crash" hard...Anything Better??
I have to agree with most of what GForce said above ^ -- Generally avoid caffeine and other stimulants while taking Adderall if it causes you to feel a "crash" while it's wearing off. Mild-to-moderate benzodiazepine might help with side effects, but your doctor would know enough to make the right decision there (he may/should ask you to take a blood test and/or EKG first).
I would not, however, suggest regularly taking a first-generation antihistamine, and a second-generation antihistamine probably wouldn't really help. If Adderall works well in treating your ADHD, then I would think your doctor would first try other amphetamine-based ADHD medications such as Dexedrine, Desoxyn, or Vyvanse (which works really well for myself). On self-incrimination: The OP said nothing wrong, and the fact that he's asking for even an anti-depressant to treat his ADHD without the crash strongly suggests that he is NOT interested in taking these medications somehow other than as prescribed. |

Re: Adderall Causes Me to "Crash" hard...Anything Better??
I'd like to add that I agree that first and second generation antihistamines shouldn't be a long-term treatment option. Even generic diphenhydramine sleep-aid that is available OTC says "Stop use and ask a doctor if sleeplessness lasts for more than 2 weeks." Plus, in my personal experience, antihistamines that make me drowsy (and are therefore taken for sleeping) don't give me a particularly good quality sleep. I usually end up sleeping way too much or just being groggy in the morning. But having diphenhydramine around isn't bad as a contingency if you're having a lot of difficulty falling asleep one night because it'll definitely do the trick.
As for muscle relaxants, a lot of them are first generation antihistamines (I'm not sure if this is the case for all of them though). I wouldn't recommend using them regularly to treat the comedown either because some of them are habit forming and generally aren't the best option for all-around relief. All they're really going to do is ease the strain on your muscles, including your heart, which is really only a measure necessary in drastic circumstances. Plus, a benzo like clonazepam is an anti-convulsant so it may be more effective at providing the side-effects one would seek from a muscle relaxant in the context of abating an Adderall comedown. |
