Dallas County Using Eye Scans To Test For Drugs
[top]Dallas County Using Eye Scans To Test For DrugsReporting Brooke Richie DALLAS (CBS 11 News) ― A scan of the eye could spill your secrets, if you're taking a drug test in Dallas County. New technology has revolutionized the way violators are tested and caught. "It's just a light that goes back and forth, and then a bright one that flashes," said State District Judge John Creuzot. "There's no way around it. You can't fool that computer." The scan compares ocular measurements to a sober baseline from the inner part of the eye. Judge Creuzot uses the scans in his drug offender program. "This really gives us a big leap forward in our confidence that people are doing well in recovery," he said. "It keeps you on your toes, not knowing when you're going to be called," said Alberto Salinas, a drug offender. "You're best off just being clean." About 400 eye scans are conducted at the courthouse every week. "It's quick and easy," said Cory Butler, another drug offender. "Once you get to know how to do it, it's in and out." "What it has done is allowed us to reduce the number of urine tests significantly," said Judge Creuzot. "Every time we do that, we save a lot of money." But most of all, participants say it is motivational. "That to me just proves to me that I can show everybody that I'm actually clean," said Salinas. http://cbs11tv.com/local/Dallas.Coun....2.599248.html |

Re: Dallas County Using Eye Scans To Test For Drugs
It relies on having a pre-measured "sober" base-line against which they can compare the scan results. People's eyes track and react at different speeds anyway, so field tests wouldn't work unless you already had an established movement pattern (I think and hope.)

Ahh...well I could see them getting the entire populations sober base-line...but I understood it as them having a "human baseline" to compare it too...the way you explained it makes more sense though.

Well that's how I understand it. As always, I could be wrong. It's happened once before.

What substances exactly could this test for? And for what length of time after taking a substance would this eye test actually be able to detect things?

Re: Dallas County Using Eye Scans To Test For Drugs
As far as I'm aware the Germans were toying with a roadside version of this over ten years ago. Height of the ecstacy culture there. It allowed them to determine intoxication leading to a blood or urine test. They flashed the eye and measured how quickly the pupil dilated against the baseline.
That's the first I've heard of it again since then. |

Always carry atropine eyedrops to give "baseline" a new meaning entirely...

Re: Dallas County Using Eye Scans To Test For Drugs
Sober baseline....lol, just eating certain foods could make you fail.
Whats even funnier is how they say this will cut drug test, as if they assume to be sober then they must not be on drugs....that'd be great, if only jobs would enroll. Also this is nothing new, cops do this all the time. What it's meant to do is whack out peoples eyes(other then the pupil dilation), sober peoples will be straight and look normal while someone under the influence of certain drugs will shake and go crazy. Re: Dallas County Using Eye Scans To Test For Drugs
Ah, so I WAS wrong. This is worrying indeed; however, like every new piece of technology a way will be found around it. I don't know about America but I am reasonably sure that if it was implemented in the UK for 'random spot checks' there would be too big a public outcry. However, I can see it being used on the roadside in combination with a breathalyser...the worrying part is the delay, they can catch cannabis smokers 6 days after they used? Will this mean more prosecutions for drugged driving when the person in question hasn't smoked for a week? Very worrying for those in zero tolerance areas.

Now this is worrisome:
New legislature pushes clubs to use new device to scan clubbers eyes for drug use. |
