Two quick questions on Hawaiian Baby Woodrose
SWIM used to have a pretty steady supply of Hawaiian Baby Woodrose seeds, but never bothered performing an extraction. He would usually just crush up 20-25 seeds, pop them in his mouth and wash it down with water. He only got really sick doing this 2 or 3 times out of about 20. However, the last time he did it he ended up puking blood about 90 minutes after taking the seeds. A friend told him that ingesting that much glucose-cyanide (I believe that's one of the chemicals in the seeds that make you sick - correct me if I'm wrong) is actually quite dangerous. Does anyone have any insight on how bad doing this actually is for the human body?
Also, SWIM was thinking of doing a naptha/alcohol extraction. He wants to know if Bacardi 151 is of high enough proof, or if it would be more prudent to get denatured alcohol. |

Re: Two quick questions on H.B. Woodrose
The poisonous substance that the seeds may contain are called cyanogenic glycosides. They are said to convert into cyanide or cyanide-like compounds through digestion. However, some articles contest the idea that these compounds really exist and instead suggest that essential oils in the seed shell account for the nausea. Your doses were much higher than the typical recommended dose and vomiting blood indicates possible damage to the stomach lining- how that damage was done, I cannot say.
Use the search engine for more, health risks for HBWR are discussed in this thread. There's another one somewhere for extraction. 151 proof alcohol could be used but near 100% pure alcohol would work better. |

Re: Two quick questions on H.B. Woodrose
The only problem that might arise form using 151 is the sugar content. A boiling and re-condensing of the steam (which would be comprised primarily of the alcohol and water, with little to no sugar) would be a simple and effective way to lower the sugar content without adding any more substances.

Re: Two quick questions on H.B. Woodrose
SWIM had another question but didn't feel like making another thread. He was trying to extract about 30 HBWR seeds, and decided to re-use some naptha he had in a cup from prior extractions. Problem is, when he poured the naptha in with the seeds, it was obvious that naptha was not the only thing that was in the cup. He can only assume it was some alcohol from the 2nd stage in the extraction from the last time he did it. He strained the liquid out immediately and replaced it with pure naptha. Do you think that the slip up there could fuck up the extraction? The ground up seeds were only in there for about a minute, but he wanted to make sure.

A minute or two wont hurt them.
The fuzzy coating on the seeds is what made you sick. Scrape it off, even is you are extracting them. |

Re: Two quick questions on H.B. Woodrose
Unfortunately, Anonymous D is incorrect in his location of the nausea inducing compounds, because the removal becomes increasingly difficult when the location becomes apparent. The nausea associated with Argyreia Nervosa is caused by a degradation of cyanogenic glycosides by specific body enzymes, resulting in hydrocyanic acid, or hydrogen cyanide. The cyanogenic glycosides were first detected in the "fuzz" coating the seeds, but the content proved to be minute. The highest concentration of the glycosides is in the essential oils of the seed itself, inducing nausea regardless of shell/fuzz presence. The extraction process could remove the majority of the Cyanide ions, depending on the method, but unless a pure product is produced, SWIM would expect mild nausea with an LSA experience, even a powdered or alcohol based extract.
