Unlike most other research chemicals there are no studies on mephedrone health risks at all. The only data available is empiric (experience reports) and comparing mephedrone to its amphetamine analogue p-MethylMethAmphetamine. Mephedrone has caused deaths.

Mephedrone is a very addictive substance. A very high % of users report, that they will not stop before all mephedrone is gone.

[top]Mephedrone side effects

Many users report blueing of the knees & limbs, vasoconstriction, heart problems, breathing problems, convulsions, fatigue, mouth sores. Side effects occur at relatively low doses. Mephedrone has caused deaths.

Not much is known about this widely used drug yet. It has no direct analogs with more information.

Random pharmacological bits and pieces swim came across on the internet: (The second one is about methcathinone but perhaps is relevant)

Pharmacological: 4-Methylmethcathinone is sympathomimetic stimulant. From proposed SAR modelling, 4-methylmethcathinone is expected to have similar pharmacological properties to methcathinone, but with increased activity on the serotonin neurotransmitter systems. Methcathinone is suggested as being more potent than its parent cathinone, and methamphetamine (1) - - - (1) Martin D Schechter; Drug-Drug Discrimination: Stimulus Properties of Drugs of Abuse Upon a Serotonergic-Dopaminergic Continuum; Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior Volume 56, Issue 1, January 1997, Pages 89-96

Methcathinone is a drug with a high abuse potential, with prolonged, high dosages known to cause psychosis and withdrawal tremors. Methcathinone is regarded as being similar in profile to methamphetamine in relation to neurotoxicity, with marked decreases in DA levels noted among abstinent users. While generally below levels associated with Parkinsons Disease, this is considered to be demonstrative of permanent, or semi permanent neurological damage (2) - - - (2) Una D. McCann, Dean F. Wong, Fuji Yokoi, Victor Villemagne, Robert F. Dannals, and George A. Ethcathinone is closely related to mephedrone and causes many side effects: Stroke, Psychosis, Pulmonary hypertension, Tachycardia, hypertension, arrhythmia, chest pain, Bone marrow depression, agranulocytosis, leukopenia, Rash, hives, alopecia, ecchymosis, impotence, dizziness, anxiety, headache, mental depression, seizures, Nausea/vomiting, constipation, abdominal cramps, diarrhea.

Oral: 100-250 mg with a duration of ~2 hours
Insufflated: 50-100 mg with a duration of ~1 hour
Never take more than 500mg in 24 hours, as that can lead to hospitalisation or worse.

Mephedrone is legal in most countries, but is an analogue of the controlled substance PMMA.

Sweden: has banned Mephedrone after a student died from consumption of mephedrone..
Israel: has banned Mephedrone in 2008, after analysis showed Neorganics products contained Mephedrone.
UK: The AMCD of the UK is looking into Mephedrone and will advice the Home Office on mephedrones legal status. It is to be expected that mephedrone will be banned in the UK.
Finland: Termed a 'medical product' making it illegal to manufacture, import, sell or possess.

Mephedrone first appeared in the Neorganics product NeoDoves in 2007. This ended in 2008 when the Israeli government banned mephedrone.
Several Chinese producers started to offer mephedrone to research chemical vendors during the spring of of 2008.
In the summer of 2008 Australian police alerted the public that ecstasy tablets with mephedrone where present in Cairns, Australia.
After the ban of BZP in several countries, the popularity of mephedrone has sky-rocketed in 2009. Research Chemical vendors estimate that approximately 6-8 kg mephedrone is sold in Europe per week.(dated June 2009) That is 100.000 - 260.000 doses per month.

As "mephedrone" (whoever came up with that name) has been revealed as one of the main ingredients in the products offered from the company selling Neo-Doves/SubCocoas (I'm unsure of the exact product and or names as I have no experience with these products) there should be quite an array of user reports available, and from what I've understood those pills were quite popular. I would be very surprised if it was anything less than quite pleasant.

Apparently ephedrone (the name obviously derived from ephedrine) has been around for some time in Russia, where it has been reported as a drug of abuse. It was known a "Jeff"!

You are, of course right. Hopefully mephedrone is less toxic, but no one has any idea of the LD50 of mephedrone.

Indeed. Methamphetamine is just ephedrine with a hydrogen atom instead of a hydroxyl functional group. The only difference between the two is the lack of an oxygen atom, but as we all know there is a huge difference in effects between the two. But no research on possible toxicity has been done yet, so these are all speculations.

The hardcore users in Russia and other contenints go for the intravenus route of hiting ephedrone, like hardcore Meth users. And since its so easy to make just about anybody with half-a-brain could. Definetly there would be lots real low grade jeff with plenty of nastys contaminants, this would contribute to the reason for physical fatalities ~

swim is not a chemistry expert but all these chemicals are structurally very closely related it would be easy to reduce from one to the other

Trivialnames like mephedrone easily add confusion, but before the vendor was banned from a danish board I frequent, it was made clear that it is 2-Methylamino-1-p-tolylpropan-1-one he was selling. And this is indeed 4-Methylmethcathinone / para-methylmethcathinone. IIRC the doubt was more on if it was infact mephedrone at all, since the labeling didn't match the molecular structure depicted on the product. (edit: The chemical depicted being N-ethylcathinone).

I stand by that mephedrone is 4-MMC / p-MMC, but what that particular vendor is selling I don't know and frankly don't care.

Ya SWIM agrees that this kind of naming was spawned by methylone. He would have prefered if 4-MMC or p-MMC had catched on instead.

however, what would be a good starting dosage, in order for him to feel some effects but not being "high", i.e. so that other people wont be able to tell that hes high apart from being in a good mood or just "active".. ?? oral and insufflated dosages would be nice..
