Drug use and its affect on left vs right brain.
So to make things pretty simple the evidence seems pretty clear that drugs are much more stimulating to the right brain then the left brain. There are plenty of artists, musicians and writers that draw inspiration from substances, but not many mathematicians, scientists or programmers. Not to say there aren't any, but among the right brain professions it seems much higher.
Any hypothesis why drugs seem so much more conducive to the right brain thinkers, then us left brain people? |

Re: Drug use and its affect on left vs right brain.
I don't abide by the theory of "right-brained" or "left-brained" people (unless they've had a hemispherectomy). It's true to an extent but there are so many variables. Artists, musicians and writers will always have more freedom in expressing their creativity seeing as their crafts are all down to aesthetic perception. Mathematicians, scientists and programmers deal with far more structured processes therefore this freedom does not exist in the same manner. Therefore it doesn't come down to brain activity as such, it's more about the nature of these professions themselves IMO.

Re: Drug use and its affect on left vs right brain.
Swim's understanding of the human brain is archaic at best but he does know that the left side of the brain has more to due with control of one's internal functions and the right has more to due with thoughts and such.
A prime example is when someone sticks a gun down their throat. They are aiming for the back left side which controls the vital organs. Not exactly sure which ones but he thinks they are at least the heart and lungs. Also this explains why people can survive a shot to the brain. They end up mentally retarted but can survive. Swim's grandpa was a medic during WWII. He was stationed on the only medical ship to be hit by a Kamaksi(for those intersted). He never spoke much about it but the only story swim heard him tell was a soldier who took a bullet to the head. He survived only to be so messed up in the head that he was hungry and somehow got a hold of a light bulb and ate it. He died of internal bleeding. |

Re: Drug use and its affect on left vs right brain.
Trying to say something simple about the lateralization of the human brain is enough to make anyone with any background in the matter shudder. Most people tend toward what those in the field like to call "lateralmania".
One thing that I might note is that said areas have much to do with meaning making faculties, which artists by nature enjoy toying with... |
