Making "flake" with a food dehydrator?
Just a thought, has anyone ever tried making "flake" with a food dehydrator?
IIRC, they only get to about 150 degrees... I make beef jerky in mine. It has about 8 circular vented layers for making jerky... but in the bottom of the dehydrator, it has a non-stick plastic ring/liner that is cupped in shape to catch any liquids that drip off the meat. Okay, leave the meat and fruit out, but fill the liner up with poppy tea/juice. This liner is perhaps 1/4" deep. Fill up the liner, turn it on, and let it dry overnight. I wonder if this would work well or if you'd have to keep adding tea to it... my guess is that you'd have to keep adding tea to it as the catch basin/reservoir isnt that deep. Its basically a hair dryer contained in a unit with trays to hang meat and fruit in to dehydrate... I'm sure it would work, if the tea was already heated up and evaporated down to a thick liquid already, the dehydrator would work well on a syrup better I'm guessing? |

Re: Making "flake" with a food dehydrator?
yes it may work well, however, if one is to leave it unattended and it is left on heat once it has dried then great losses would be apparent, automation can be both good and bad. SWIM has thought of using this way too at times and will perhaps try it in the future but he mainly sticks to what he knows works so he will just do a small test batch this way and perhaps post the results.
