A WITNESS gave a rare glimpse into Toowoomba's underworld yesterday as Jamie William Williamson, the alleged major player in a $10million drug operation, and Shane Arthur Laurie appeared in Toowoomba Magistrates Court for committal hearing.


Prosecutor Sergeant Greg Lewis said the witness had received threats to stop him from giving evidence.


"He's had threats made to the safety of his children if he gives evidence today," Sgt Lewis said.


The male witness was the first to take the stand and told how he bought drugs from Williamson for about eight to 10 months.


"Sixteen ounces (453.6grams of marijuana) cost me $4200," he said.


Williamson later gave the witness Laurie's phone number, the court was told.


"Jamie was a bit hot with the coppers and that so someone else had to do the run," he said.


The witness said his marijuana habit (up to $1000 a week) spanned seven years after he was involved in a car crash in which a girl was killed.


"I used to smoke a lot of marijuana  a hell of a lot," he said.
The witness said he was given Williamson's phone number from a drug dealer acquaintance after the dealer's home was raided.


The witness said this dealer "Jenno" had placed prawns to put off the sniffer dogs during the raid and had marijuana hidden in the bonnet of his car and money buried in the backyard.


The defence solicitors outlined some discrepancies in the witness' original statements to police.


Arresting officer Detective Sergeant Adrian Lange said both Williamson and Laurie had two sets of keys which unlocked two separate sheds at Wilsonton.


A police raid on one of the sheds on December 4 netted 2.5kg of methylamphetamines, 8kg of cannabis, 2000 ecstasy tables, $579,000 in cash, and weapons.


The hearing will continue today.

If he was paying 4,200 for 16 ounces, then 1 ounce cost him 262.5, which means he would have to be smoking 3.8 ounces a week to expend 1000. He wouldn't have had a chance to put down the joint

No wonder he got busted, he's obviously a cretin. My uncle Joe has visited Sydney many times, and $4200 Australian (2,566.52 euro according to xe.com) for a pound of weed is completely absurd.

If so, he must have been stoned off his nut when he entered his plea. "Pound smokers" are stricly the domain of braggadious hip hop MC's.

Not to knock Mos Def, between "Black On Both Sides" and "Black Star" he's one of my favorite MC/producers out there.

But a judicial defense of "Your honor, I smoke a pound of sess on a regular basis" is likely to get him a belly laugh from the judge, and a long term sentence in jail.

Perhaps he's a poster boy for not defending yourself in court. We're not all that dude from "Good Will Hunting".
