What are the necessary traits that make a good gravity bong? Swim's has yet to deal with one, so he really needs a schematic walkthrough.

Personally swim has found that the best gravity bong is not the one using a bathtub and a 10 gallon bucket but using much smalleer supplies. He prefers to cut the top off a 20 oz coke bottle, which is used for the base. Then the bottom is cut off of a deer park water bottle, which will be the inner part. Swim has found that the water bottles fit perfectly inside the coke bottles when cut correctly. Then he usually uses the bowl piece off an old metal bowl he has and cuts a small circle in the center of the deer park cap until the botton of the bowl fits very snuggly through the hole. These caps usually last a while before melting, store brand water bottles wil lwork but the caps will melt alot quicker. Then you fill your coke bottle with water fill the bowl with pot and rip away. The trick is to pull up slowly and in a circular motion as to utilize every bit of suction you have. And pack the bowl with very finely brocken up bud for optimum burning. Once you have mastered the technique of filling the chamber this little contraption can pack a mighty punhc and is very economical with your stash. Hope i was clear enough, if not let me know. It is very simple. Here is what you will need for supplies:
2 liter soda bottle with cap
5 Gallon bucket (or something big enough to submerge the bottle into)
1 bowlpiece (aka slide for a bong)
Scissors or a bread knife.

Setting it up:

You can cut the bottle in one of two ways. You can cut the whole bottom off (like in the picture that is attached to this post) Or the more perferable way (to me) is to cut off each of the little "legs" of the bottle. What i usually do is lay the bottle on the side. Start at the yellow line (on the coke bottle pic) and cut out the triangle in green. Leave anything in red. When your finished, the "legs" should have triangles cut out of them, with the bottom still intact so it can stand up... (you can also cut each of the 5 little bottoms off to have small squares)

Reason for not just cutting the bottom:

Why not just cut the bottom off? it's faster, easier... Well i have a few reasons. When just cutting out the triangles, or just the bottom part of the square, i find that the water is more controled when it is flowing out. It helps to mantain the structural integrety of the bottle, so it dosent just fold into itself and the water flowing out really quick. With the triangles, i find the suction is much stronger, and it pulls a better GB.

Setting up the cap:

Take a drill bit either the same size as the slide, or a tiny bit smaller. Slide the bowl piece and stem through the hole, and seal with some type of putty or something to make airtight. If your pushing a bowlpiece through a hole that is smaller then the slide, then heat the plastic first...

Pulling it:

Put the bottle in the water, pack the goodies in the bowl, screw it on all the way, and gentally pull up. There is a method that will get the bowl to cherry really quick (quick up and down motions with the 2-liter)... But you will get it as the time goes on.... For the biggest hit possible, blow out all the air in your lungs prior to the hit, and then suck it up and hold!

Ahhh, those were the days! 2 gravity bongs before I took off to work as a dishwasher at a upscale restuarant, completely anhiliated. The occasional drop of drool leaving any given "awe'd" out opening of my mouth..

Yes, thats the difference I think if a bottle use a bucket, its called a bucket. also another method is to tape a bag to the end of the litre bottle and slowly pull the bag out as the smoke is being drawn so it creams the bottle to a white sort of color, then chug all that back that is called a lung, well over in the uk it is

Well everyone, SWIM's homemade (mostly roommate made) gravity bong was a success. However, as SWIM/his roommate are smoking vets with large lung capacities, the single 2-Liter chamber wasn't quite large enough.

We may, in the near future, create what SWIM likes to call the "Ultra G.B." Pretty much, the thing is going to have at least 4 L of chamber space (multiple chambers) that is entirely connected/plumbed together, plus a really sweet floating pedestal that allows for steady draw/ease of use after a few bowls.

Well the other day i created a bong out of a Propel water bottle. originally it was just a bong but i decided to add a tube for sucking at the top. eventually i cut the tube in half and put it in their too. So the final result was a bong with 2 tubes at the top for sucking. it worked quite well, except for the fact that i didnt have a real slider so i used a metal pen cap. Which eventually melted. So now im working on a bigger bottle with the tubes again and a metal pipe at the bottom. But i have purchased a glass slider to put in the metal pipe. Now im working on a, Gravity bong? i have no idea what it is, SWIM told me about it and i want one really bad. Can someone please explain via pics or blueprints of some sort. he wants me to build it for him. so any help is wonderful.

I am a little bit shocked by the price, a bit overpriced with shipping, tax and all that would destroy a franklin picture. it would be nice to enjoy a cool water filtered power hit in a dream. but all I seee in my dream now are dollar signs nintey clouds of dollars signs floating out the window.

^^^I bet we could get the cost down. The design doesn't seem too complex, we have some ingenious members on this site. Also, marijuana smokers can be pretty creative when they're trying to make something to smoke their goods.

Anyswiy wanna take a stab at it? Some type of fish/small sump-pump motor would probably work for the motor part. They probably have some patents on this I wonder if there is any good information there.

I dont think there is a motor , it looks like the water transfering causes a vacuum pulling the hit inside the cylinder, basically just two chambers and a shut off valve.

There is a part that confuses me though. The water empties from the top chamber to the bottom and the smoke fills the space left where the water used to be in the top chamber. Where does the air that used to be in the bottom chamber go? It seems as though it must be let out from the whole vortex device in some.

maybe there wasnt air in the bottom chamber? It very well could be in a vacuum state , like 29 inches of mercury.

To be able to just pour the water in and for the smoke to get in it must be an open system...760 torr.

In addition there is a carb which helps regulate pressure, I believe the air may actually leave here...You keep the finger over the carb while the water is on top, then open the carb to drain the water down, pull the smoke through, and force the air in the bottom chamber out of the carb...I think this is how it works.

Either way, I can assure you this bong does not violate the laws of physics ...

To make a gravity bong bubble like a real bong just use a tube from the lid to the bottom of it and when you pull it up out of the water to get it to smoke it will bubble just like a normal water bong.

This device is exactly like a homemade creation that SWIM exclusivly smokes out of. Its called a Waterfall Bong, and is similar to a gravity, but SWIM findss it much more potent.

SWIM takes a small water bottle and place a bowl in the cap, similar to a gravity bongs cap, and make sure its air tight. Then Swim cuts a small hole on the bottom side of the bottle, no bigger than a cm across. Swim fills the bottle with water and places his finger over the hole in the bottom, then he places smokables in the bowl, applies a ligther to them, and releases the hole. The water drains out, creating a vaccum within the bottle, drawing what Swim would say is about 90+% of the smoke, if not all, into the bottle. Swim would say it draws even more smoke than a gravity bong, but who knows.

Sorry for a double post, I have yet to find an edit button, but SWIM has made water-filtered versions by using a tube that extends all the way to the bottom of the bottle, and placing a screen inside this tube above the water level and using the device as normal.

the carb in the bottom makes the pressure in the lower chamber the same as normal air pressure. as for the middle seal that is'nt that tricky, because in this situation, if you can make it water tight, the water itself makes the seal air-tight, you get me?

the TRICKY part is being able to turn the contraption up side down without water coming out where you put the bowl. Swim is planning on making a similar device today, and he believes he can solve the problem by creating a chamber containing a ball bearing that tapers toward the top, so when it is flipped, the bearing will seal the tapered entrance.

Swim will tell me to tell you how it goes!

here's an easy way:

get a big bottle, like those gallon orange juices or something, poke a hole in the cap and form a bowl out of tinfoil that would fit in the hole. make sure its snug. then poke a hole on the bottom big enough so water could pour out at a decent speed (width of your finger maybe) then fill your sink or something with water and fill the bottle up to. make the hole is under water. pack a bowl and screw on the cap. slowly start to lift the bottle so the watter drains out while applying the flame to the bowl. once all the waters out in screw the cap and suck out all the smoke
