tramadol tested in water

SWIM has a drug test coming up for probation, and is using tramadol for a few days to keep off heroin. So, to see whether tramadol would show up or not, swim filled a cup up with about 2 inches of warm water, crushed a 50mg tramadol into a very fine powder and poured it into the water, mixing it very well.

SWIM then stuck in an opiate drug test, and it came back negative. Should this have worked? I mean, if tramadol was an opiate would it show up positive? It seems to me like if you stuck a drug test into some liquid heroin, it would show up, but I really don't know, and SWIMs not gonna waste any heroin trying it.

I can tell your monkey this: Tramadol's molecular structure is extremely disimilar to an actual opiate. Can it trigger a test for opiods? I rather doubt it. But don't hold me to that. Ask your monkey to write a report after all is said and done. But don't develop a fondness for poppy-seed bagels.

It will not show unless they test specifically for it. SWiM is very certain of this.

All the natural and semi-synthetic opioids are based on the morphinan structure. Most if not all drug test react on the targeted drugs and their metabolites, so a test kit for opioids will probaly only test positive on any substance with an morphinan structure, unless it specifically tests for other opioids, which aren't based on morphinan structures, like fentanyl and it's derivatives, or methadone, and tramadol.
