Paraphernalia - card and free-hand rolling

well..
my green t-rex does has the habit to roll his joints using a card to line up the whole thing.
then,onde day,he lost his green card,and had to roll the grass on the free-hand style ().He then rolled a joint,that wasn't very good on appearence,but when he smoked it,it was the best joint he had smoked on the last months.

then he started wondering : something caused that.Therefore,there is a manner to roll that will make the joint better.
can someone elucidate this point for me,please?
