Drug info - Flavouring Essence?

my friend uses 'flavouring essence', such as vanilla essence and lemon essence, to get himself drunk on a regular basis. he claims it's just as safe as binge drinking alcohol bought from a liquor store but i have trouble believing him. i'm guessing this is similar to drinking methylated spirits, because if what he is saying is true i doubt these flavouring essence's could be found in your average grocery store. anyway i had a look a the bottles last time i saw him, the ingredients said vanilla essence contained 30% alcohol, and lemon essence contained 85% alcohol. is it really as safe as he claims? or is he doing himself more damage than he knows.
