ALCOHOL vs MARIJUANA by Anonymous
Two of most common used drugs in America are alcohol and marijuana. Alcohol is very popular legal drug. Marijuana is the most popular illicit drug. Alcohol is responsible thousands of deaths each year and is extremely dangerous. Marijuana is responsible for no deaths each year and is relatively safe. In this essay I will compare and contrast these two drugs with facts and statistics.
Alcohol is responsible for more than 100,000 deaths each year in America. This number is a scary fact that i feel everyone must know. We are killing ourselves and we need to get the word out there. People die from strokes and cancer failure from alcohol every day. Alcohol related crashes are a huge factor for deaths by children and adults. Also, people who are not under the influence can be effected by alcohol from intoxicated drivers. One beer every day is known to lower risk of cardiovascular disease is the only good character.
Alcohol is the immediate cause from drunk driving collisions. Every 15 minutes someone is killed in accident involving alcohol. In 2005, 16,885 people died in alcohol related crashes and 1.4 million were arrested for being under the influence of alcohol. 414 children, 14 years and younger, died in alcohol related crashes in 2005. Every year the crashes involving alcohol cost about 51 billion dollar, according to 2002 statistics.
Although marijuana does not kill, it is known as the gateway drug and death occurs from the new drugs people try after marijuana. People known to smoke it have a increased percentage of using other substances. Anyone who smokes marijuana will be 104 times more likely to use cocaine this is compare to people who have never smoked marijuana. Youth who smoke marijuana will be 5 times more likely to use harder drugs. Marijuana is not deadly but has serious long term effects. A small amount of marijuana a day is known to release chronic pain and stress
Marijuana is the most common illicit drug. It can cause impaired memory and learning, increased heart rate, and anxiety. It causes the same effects at cigarettes. New information is saying that marijuana is a cause for mental illness. The human body was not made to have such high amount of THC in the body. THC contains more than 400 chemicals.
Alcohol effects the young like no other drug. 50 % of seniors drink while 32% say they have got drunk at least once. Alcohol alone kills 6 1/2 times more children than any other drugs. Youth who start drinking early are 50% more likely to develop a cocaine addiction. Youth who drink will suffer 10% memory loss for a good portion of there life. Drinking will help develop an impaired thinking process which can lead to unprotected sex and poor discussion making.
Why is are youth having so many problems with alcohol at such a early age? 65% of youth say they get alcohol from family and friends. Alcohol is a legal drug and for that very reason it is looked at as an okay thing to do. Alcohol is accepted by friends, family, and the nation. For example, someone who smokes marijuana would be considered a drug addict compared to someone who drinks alcohol. In my opinion, from the facts given, alcohol is more of drug than marijuana will ever be.
69 million people, 12 years of age and older, are said to have tried marijuana at least once. Marijuana is not as serious as alcohol because it does not kill people, however, it effects the youth in other ways. Like alcohol, marijuana does impair judgment and discussion making. The youth who smoke marijuana are known to miss school, sports, and lose friends. Personally, I agree that marijuana contributes to missing school and sport but the friends it not necessarily true.
The most recent study on marijuana is by Mike Moffat, "Should Governments Legalize And Tax Marijuana". Marijuana is currently illegal and all sale are not taxed. These are big bucks the government could be making. If marijuana is legalized it is estimated to create 6.2 billion dollars a year!!!!! 7.7 bill on dollars would be saved by the federal government for the prosecution of marijuana offensives!!!!!!!
In conclusion, both drugs have short and long term problems. In my opinion, Alcohol should be illegal because it is the cause for an outrageous number of deaths. Marijuana should be legalized because it does have a medical purpose and is used daily by patients. All drugs are bad but during my research has proved that we has a whole are killing ourselves.
