Using ginger pills to combat nausea

Hi all, swim hopes this is the best forum for this, it could be posted in many forums about substances that cause nausea so it'll go here for now.
Swim has been using ginger root capsules to get rid of nausea for a while now, after seeing a Mythbusters episode that confirmed it is comparable to dramamine for its ability to relieve motion sickness without the lassitude. Swim has found it to be perfect for heading off nausea that accompanies vicodin usage or just to help an upset stomach. Swim has previously used ginger ale for the same reason but found ginger root capsules to be cheaper and more effective and available at many drugstores.
Anyone else have the same luck with ginger root? Is it more or less effective with other substances? Is it unwise to combine it with any other substances? Any side effects swim doesn't know about?

Re: Using ginger pills to combat nausea

Ginger may work somehow, and although it may not have the highest of potentials, it is very easily obtained so I would have to say its a good proposal. If nausea is a more serious issue for any Swimmer, they might want to ask their doc about Compazine (prochlorperazine), Trilafon (perphenazine), Torecan (thiethylperazine), Kytril (granisetron), and Zofran (ondansteron). Swim says that marijuana helps his nausea slightly, or sometimes he claims a small dose of a benzo can help.

I absolutely LOVE ginger, its taste and its effects. As far as I know, it doesn't have many long term effects, but I would suggest asking your doctor.

Another tastier way to take it would be to candy it.

Re: Using ginger pills to combat nausea

I once read in a home remedies book my grandma had lying around the house... forget what exactly it was used for... probably the forementioned purposes. It went on to say at the end of the section on the spice, ginger... something like, "but becareful how much you ingest as ginger is a natural hallucinogen." I was real young at the time and tried small amounts, but had never tried any real mild altering substances at my young age so never got brave enough to consume very much.

Re: Using ginger pills to combat nausea

Oh yeah, I love ginger for upset stomach. I have a shit ton of ginger chews, and crystallized ginger cubes.

SWIM takes them everytime he eats shrooms, they work instantly no matter how bad your stomach is hurting. I don't like the taste so I pretty much stick to the crystallized ginger cubes, but some friends like the chews.

Re: Using ginger pills to combat nausea

SWIM almost can't wait til she gets an upset stomach to try this out! It definitely is cool when we find effective remedies for common ailments that do not require a prescription.

Come to think of it, SWIM often gets car sick when she has to ride with certain individuals... Will have to give this a try next time SWIM finds herself being tossed about in the passenger's seat.

Re: Using ginger pills to combat nausea

I have quite sever motion sickness and ive use ginger root capsules for years to to effectively combat this and found it very usefull. Ginger is a natural Anti-Emetic.

However ive found it useless in some other situations, for example sickeness and impending vomiting from too much alcohol ginger could not overcome

Re: Using ginger pills to combat nausea

Y's kratom experiences show, no nausea when using ginger beer, but when using ginger pills, the nausea dosen't budge.

Y wonders, because ginger beer is fizzy (carbonated) could the fizz have something to do with the greater effectiveness of the ginger beer, over the pills.
Y hasn't tried ginger ale.

Re: Using ginger pills to combat nausea

Nobody finds that ginger beer is generally stronger then the "ale's". Probably not worth getting ginger ale if you enjoy the beers. And yes, the carbonation is helpful.

Crystallized ginger for the win!

Might also try pickled ginger used in sushi making, especially if sugar intake is a concern. It's much more palatable the straight ginger.
