Tobacco on Heroin
Why do cigarettes give swim the nods big time... swim has burnt many a hole in trousers/chairs etc when smoking a cigarette on H

Re: Tobacco on H
It's not the tobacco, it's the smack. Usually referred to as 'gouching" (i HATE that word), it is a state where one will almost nod off in to sleep, but it isn't the same as being a sleep.
I don't know why it would happen when one smokes tobacco, it should happen pretty much at any point unless ones attention is focused on something. I imagine one would lose focus quite easily while smoking a cigarette, it wouldn't take much concentration. |

Re: Tobacco on H
nicotine does seem to strengthen the buzz a little. if swim uses a lot of heroin, a few cigarettes usually make him nauseus.

Re: Tobacco on H
Maybe it does strengthen the buzz slightly, my friend has never really noticed this and he has been a heroin addict for years now.
I suppose it is possible if the user smokes the heroin, then perhaps smoking a cigarette (often done whilst smoking heroin as a 'chaser') after the user has finished smoking the heroin, then that causes residual heroin in the lungs to be absorbed. It's just a guess or theory if you like. Since nicotine is in fact a mild stimulant, i really can't see how it could potentiate opiates at all, that's why my 'theory' seems the only logical reason why a user would seem to get increased effects while smoking a cigarette. That or it simply is the heroin and lack of focus causing the user to 'gouche' like i mentioned in my first reply. My friend has burned himself and his bed sheets/pillow/carpet/t-shirt/etc. many a time. That said, nowadays, he doesn't get those effects any more unless he takes a lot of valium (or similar) and a good few bags. He has huge tolerance because he takes 90mg of methadone every day. Even so, i do know a few users that have a high tolerance to heroin (they don't take methadone) and still get that 'gouching' effect (i hate that word so much), which is actually quite nice, my friend likes it when it does happen and when it used to happen. |

Re: Tobacco on H
SWIM used to chain smoke on heroin, it seemed to enhance the buzz for her and she frequently nodded out while smoking too (only when she was lying down though). After a few hours though SWIM would be sick and she is pretty sure that was a result of too many cigarettes rather than too much heroin, if it had been the heroin SWIM would have been sick immediately after her blast she thinks.

Re: Tobacco on H
swim has burnt MANY holes in his bed/blanket and many shirts from nodding while smoking. I kind of doubt a ciggarrete will really increase the buzz, but the added nicotine buzz makes it feel stronger. Swim always craves a ciggarete right after a shot, and if he doesn't have any, he usually just keeps taking more shots, rather than smoking more ciggaretes like he would normally.

Re: Tobacco on Heroin
SWIM is bumping this to bring up the combination of nicotine + heroin. From SWIMs experiences, the first cigarette after doing dope does strengthen the buzz and is great.
However when SWIM smokes a couple cigarettes after, he starts to feel nauseous and usually vomits. He has been using for a while, so it isn't just because he's a new user. Does the same happen any other SWIMmers? |

Re: Tobacco on Heroin
If you read the Wikipedia article on tobacco, it mentions that nicotine has been shown to make the dopamine pathways more sensitive, and causes the body to get rid of opiates or dopamine slower (can't remember which).
If that is true, it would seem at least a partial explanation. Last edited by dyingtomorrow; 07-11-2009 at 02:29. |

Re: Tobacco on Heroin
Swim likes to chew tobbaco and smoke while he nods, the first really seems to increase it.

Re: Tobacco on Heroin
agreed with above- swim always must have a smoke when either smoking H or doing his usually route of pills nasally.
it just seems to always up the high and take it to the next level, not sure why or how- does anyone have a scientific contribution for this thread as to why this does occur- is there something in the brain that happens, is is solely the tobacco, etc? Thanks!! Jesse |

Re: Tobacco on Heroin
Man, SWIM has really nasty scars from nodding with cigs. SWIM has used for seven years and has given himself alot of nasty burns between his fingers on his right hand. One time had big blisters from a burn then nodded again the next day and burned the blisters. OUCH! That sucked big time. Also 50% of SWIMs clothes and all his bed sheets and blankets have holes. Damn, SWIM wishes he didn't need to smoke while he is so high.

Re: Tobacco on Heroin
Swim has experienced this as well. Swim is not sure why this happens, but anytime he takes any type of opiate cigarettes seem to make the buzz stronger. Sometimes if he has taken a big dose cigarettes make him feel queezy and sometimes initiate puking.

Re: Tobacco on Heroin
nicotine mimics acetylcholine in the brain, a neurotransmitter. This releases dopamine and also actives fight-or-flight pathways (increased breathing, heartrate)
from random website: Acetylcholine is the neurotransmitter that (depending on what region of the brain a neuron is in): * Delivers signals from your brain to your muscles * Controls basic functions like your energy level, the beating of your heart and how you breathe * Acts as a "traffic cop" overseeing the flow of information in your brain * Plays a role in learning and memory and also: Nicotine also increases the level of other neurotransmitters and chemicals that modulate how your brain works. For example, your brain makes more endorphins in response to nicotine. Endorphins are small proteins that are often called the body's natural pain killer. It turns out that the chemical structure of endorphins is very similar to that of heavy-duty synthetic painkillers like morphine. Endorphins can lead to feelings of euphoria also. If you're familiar with the runner's high that kicks in during a rigorous race, you've experienced the "endorphin rush." This outpouring of chemicals gives you a mental edge to finish the race while temporarily masking the nagging pains you might otherwise feel. but swim just really likes the taste of ciggies if he's high (or drunk), and surprisingly hates them if he's withdrawling. It is quite possible that poly drug use of nicotine and opiates increase longevity of high slightly, even if just by saturating pathways for metabolising the morphine. It also probably assists in maintaining an addictive lifestyle, as acetylcholine affects learning and positive reinforcement (according to swims limited knowledge...) |

Yeah swim could always count on a good nod while smoking, and wrecked jeans, shirts, sheets and carpets.

Re: Tobacco on Heroin
[ SWIM Can recall being told that smoking a cigarette whilst smoking smack would enhance the buzz..why this is so SWIM is not sure, although the two do seem to go together.. he notes that he also like an above post hates the word 'gouch'..
its worth noting again and again that smoking a cigarette whilst ingesting smack alone is very very dangerous, burns on sofa fabric and clothing can be the least thing to worry about if a user goes on the nod with a lit cigarette in hand..SWIM was 'woken' more than once by the pain of a smouldering cigarette between his fingers or on his chest..he winces at the memory of finding burnholes on his quilt cover with no memory of even lighting a cigarette'... ...

Re: Tobacco on Heroin
if swim smoke h he takes a hit of a cig after each toot. Cigs defo make swim nod from the gear. he knows its the gear but the cigs induce it... and also swim voms after smoking on gear.
