Alright I won't be able to help you to much but I have heard about if you buy the wrong kind of poppies to make tea to get high it could just make you very sick. This sounds like what happened to you, as for the blood I dunno that sux, and pretty bizarre. I wouldn't continue buying poppy seeds there try some ethno sites.

Its highly possible that they were coated in something to discourage consumption and/or act as a pesticide.

PenguinPhreak is right, it is most probable that they were coated with some mild toxins to prevent ingestion (well if they don't warn you ahead of time, it would be to eliminate pleasure from ingestion). This is what local arts and crafts stores started doing just before they quit selling dried poppies altogether. If you purchased your pods from a completely straight-nosed flower arranging supplier, you may haverecieved pods coated with something unpleasant. I never really figured the online distributors were coating their pods, but I can deffinately see how some companies might think it best. I've always been fortunate enough to deal with companies that merely pretend to sell poppies for flower arrangements. |

Answer me this... Did you have any type of ear ringing going on? If so, ear ringing is a classic sign of pesticide poisoning. There is only one supplier that I am aware of that sells pods that are not treated with pesticide, and they are about done with their business now anyway. Here are signs to watch for that are classic to pesticide poisoning. Ear ringing, sever stomach cramps, kidney pain. Be aware that continues pesticide poisoning can and will cause hearing lose, and sclerosis of the liver to name but a few, not to mention death! Be extremely careful what you are buying, and if you do not know who, what, or where it came from, I'd highly recommend not doing it. Lost |

In addition to what the others already said, I just want to say: 1. When you use the first time, feeling sick is pretty common. I got really bad stomach problems from poppy tea also. Even without pesticides it is rough stuff for your stomach. But when you had such bad reactions, there might really be some toxins. I cant tell you that. What you should ALWAYS do when you get a new bunch of poppies, is cleaning them with some water and then drying them with a towel. Each single pod. 2. There are poppies high in Thebaine. This alkaloid is pretty poisonouss and can cause especially nausea, headache, heartproblems like low bloodpressure. Because the content in each bunch can vary widely one should ALWAYS grind all the pods and mix them to get a steady alkaloid level. 3. Especially on dried corn, and poppies are dried, there can be some of the most poisonous molds / funghi known. I heard of people getting really sick from drinking tea from molded pods. Because of that you shouldALWAYS discard molded pods. You should also cut off the black spots if they are forming little hills or if they are too big. Always keep your grinded pods in an air sealed plastic container in the freezer. That keeps the spreading of funghi on a low level. With this three rules you go pretty safe. But if the reactions stay like that you might reall have some toxine sprayed pods or be allergic or the pods have a high amount of thebaine. In that case discard the pods. Edited by: bogumil |

Hi Bogumil... I had a question about what you just said about molded pods.... How can you tell if they are too molded.... Is purple mold or just color? What about little black dots on the poppies? |

Yes, thats kind of difficult and you learn it with the time ... Here are the factors I use: 1. The pods smell like vomit 2. The little black spots that you have on almost every pod are too big (you can see they look strange, compare with the other spots) or / and hilly. Pods that smell like vomit throw away. The bad spots cut out. Hope, that helps you some. |

You dont need to check for it too much. I never had a sickness because of funghus (one time i got sick but i guess it was thebain). Just throw out the worst ones, wipe the rest, grind all and mix and store them in the cooler. As long as you dint drink more than 2 teas a day you should be fine. A tea keeps you running for almost 48 hours. So you can drink every 2, 3 days and then a certain amount of funghus will be managable. Good luck and happy drinking!Edited by: bogumil |
