Salvia Herb Being Used as Drug in Parts of North Alabama

Some high school and middle school students in Franklin County have recently used the herb salvia to get high.


It's a problem officials there are concerned with.


It's a situation officials in Madison County hope they can prevent.
Janet Craig finds a web site on the internet where you can buy Salvia. For her, it's troubling.


As part of her job with the Partnership For a Drug Free Community, she counsels teens on the potential dangers of drug use.


"Salvia is a hallucinogenic when it is smoked or used and it causes chemical reactions very similar to LSD trips and other types of hallucinogenic," says Craig.


For students here in Madison County, Craig says many of them don't realize how dangerous drug use, and in some cases, drug abuse, can be.


"The students don't understand how damaging it can be to their body but as we do more research we understand that there are chemical changes in the brain that occur in these pleasure centers and they cause different effects on different students," Craig says.


Counseling kids with drug problems is luckily something Sheri Crigger doesn't have to do often.


The Grissom High School Senior Guidance Counselor tells us drug use isn't a big problem at her school. Still, she hadn't heard of Salvia when we first spoke.


"What I did today is what I do anytime when I hear of something, I go to the internet and try to find out about it or to one of our security officers who really keep in touch with all that stuff and try to find out about it," says Crigger.


And now, Crigger says she'll learn more about Salvia and what kind of problems the strong herb can inflict.


It's a potential problem she and Craig hope they can nip in the bud before it becomes a cause for concern in Madison County.

Boy she's spot on, she must be a doctor. The psychopharmacology of salvia is nearly identical to that of LSD! (sarcasm). It works on the pleasure centres of the brain? That's why EVERYONE enjoys it so much. Tell us Ms. Craig, what research have you in regards to just how damaging salvia is to the students bodies?

Sounds like it's time to stock up on the Salvia. It's just a matter of time before it's banned now - so many articles are being written about it.

why must every official assume that because someone does something that is "dangerous" that they don't know the risks.
Swim is sure that the majority of drug users know about the dangers.
They just don't realize that there is a time to argue and a time to step off.

i love how people can take something they havent experienced themselves and turn it into hell.... salvia and acid can be compared, just because you hallucinate, but salvia is a harmless drug, and should be kept low key.
