Methadone or subutex for pain?

SWIM is on a methadone for pain and to stop him using street opiates. SWIM finds methadone just isn't working for the pain as well as heroin or morphine. SWIM is on 90mg of methadone a day. SWIM has been reading about subutex and it sounds good, people report good mood and good pain killing effects. Methadone just makes SWIM grumpy and still feels quite anxious on it.

Can anyone tell me which is better for pain killing effects?

Re: Methadone or subutex for pain?

I used subutex to kick a oxycontin habit and it worked great. They really didn't do that much for the pain though. I never had methadone so I can't help ya there. The subutex did help with the shitty mood while coming off the oxy's. Hope this helps ya.

Re: Methadone or subutex for pain?

I was on the 2mg subutex. I took 2 every 8 hrs. Yes, I suffer chronic back pain, but it something that I am trying to deal with. I would rather deal with the back pain though, then to go through the withdrawls that I would face when I was out of oxy's. That was the worst thing I have ever dealt with. No joke.

Re: Methadone or subutex for pain?

For over 5 yrs SWIM was prescribed 120 mg of Methadone daily for chronic pain, with 90 mg of MS-IR for breakthrough pain.
SWIM now takes 24mg Dilaudid, 120 mg Oxycontin, and 30 mg Methadone daily and is finally where SWIM needs to be.

Re: Methadone or subutex for pain?

You're not meant to mix subutex with other opiates otherwise it puts you into withdrawl - Read the leaflet that comes with it. Normally, they transfer methadone patients from Meth to subutex at 15ml BUT the leflet says it can be done at 30ml.

Just see your Dr, he should be able to prescribe something which will specifically target the area and what can be used with methadone.

Re: Methadone or subutex for pain?

swim has been on suboxone (buprenorphine) for one year. swim has had methadone numerous times but not perscribed to it. methadone is known to have more pain killing effects than buprenorphine, but the latter did start out as a pain medication. still, methadone is probably better for that. swim must say that buprenorphine really does have anti depressant qualities to it. in fact its kind of energizing. it seems to really lift the mood and motivation unlike pretty much all other opioids. oh yeah this is definately not in a stimulant drug type way at all, although it is kind of stimulating if swiy understands. like swim said before, more of a mood lift/happy feeling. it is not in any way an anxious type of feeling. buprenorphine may not kill the pain quite as well, but it really is a great drug. especially for the mentioned effects. swiy should weigh out the pros and cons. maybe a switch is just what swiy needed?

Re: Methadone or subutex for pain?

Thanks for the comments. Yes SWIM likes the sound of subutex, being happy can have some pain killing effects in its self. SWIM is not happy at all on methadone, SWIM will talk to his Dr next week when he goes to review his script. The happy/energizing effects sound great to SWIM as he is feeling very low in mood and energy.
