Does smoking marijuana increase chances of respiratory depression?
Basically SWIM wants to know the answer to the title. He has contemplated this everytime he has ever done codeine, and thinks it would be a really nice combination. But has always feared the consequence of respiratory depression enough not too try it. If SWIM was doing a high dose like 400 or 500mg, would smoking marijuana increase his chances of ODing?

Re: Does smoking marijuana increase chances of respiratory depression?
a friend of swim's, kitty, has combined the two on a regular basis. kitty reports that the last time she did this, there was a stage when kitty had to lay down flat due to nausea and noticed that her breathing was slower than normal. kitty just focused on her breathing and was ok. kitty wasn't taking as much codeine as swir (150mg compared to 400mg) but still had the effect of it due to a lower tolerance (perhaps).
kitty says it is an excellent combo for her, as you get the high from the codeine with the high from the pot, both different but enjoyable highs. kitty noticed that pot influenced her nodding off a bit more than when she didn't have a smoke and found it easier to fall asleep, but from what she has read on the forums here, an antihistamine may assist with that (thoughts anyone?). as for the answer to the question, swim doesn't know. however exercising caution is important. perhaps lowering dose of codeine? everyone is different so it would depend on what works for swir. also, taking it slow on the pot may be an option too. |

Re: Does smoking marijuana increase chances of respiratory depression?
Swim has never liked pot because it causes moderate to extreme paranoia and anxiety in moderate to high doses.
What Swim would like to know though, is whether taking it with codeine will counteract those effects and make the high more pleasant. |

Re: Does smoking marijuana increase chances of respiratory depression?
kitty says that when she smokes pot on its own she experiences anxiety and paranoia for about an hour after she has smoked it. after that hour has passed she is mellow and enjoys the high. from what kitty recalled from her experience of combining the two, she said she felt significantly less paranoia and anxiety when using codeine. kitty and her friend sanchez both noticed that there was an underlying euphoria with the normal pot high, which they explained to be the codeiene.
all that being said, everyone is different. swim does not condone using these substances together and if swiy does decide to, suggests that swiy takes it easy and goes slow. some people trip out really bad on pot, swim has heard of it triggering psychosis in some people. swim hhopes everyone takes care when mixing and matching.... |

Re: Does smoking marijuana increase chances of respiratory depression?
SWIM's opinion would be that since he has typically always used MJ as an enhancer sort of drug, as it seems to intensify the effects of many substances that one should exercise caution combining the two if the person were opiate naive or had a low tolerance... that being said, SWIM does not think that it will likely be a concern for hardcore opiate addicts. But everyone's body is different, thus SWIM is sure that there is at least one person out there whom could suffer death due to enhanced respiratory depression and die as result of the combo when the opiate dose alone would not have caused death.

Re: Does smoking marijuana increase chances of respiratory depression?
Swim has the best combination! Swiy must have at least 200mg Codeine, A generous dose of caffeine (two or three red bulls should do the trick), two or three glassed of wine (or alcohol of choice) and then to top it all off, smoke a nice fat J. Swim finds that this combo counter all the bad effects of each other, but all the good ones stay, leaving Swiy with a pleasant feeling for a decent amount of time.. Very enjoyable!!! The weed is very important, and timing is everything! If Swiy knows your body, you should know how long it takes the substances to hit Swiy.. Best would be to have them all peak at the same time.. Smoke the joint at the very end!
