Question new doctor, pls advise.

ok guyes justa quick question.
but first here is some info on swim.

swim is 20 yesrs old and lives in the UK.
swim has had back pain for 6 years now.
swim has gone to chyropractors, rumatology, done exercises. no relief.
swim was beat up when she was 14 and this is what started her back pain.
swim has never had an xray or mri.
swim gets pain in her spine, lower back, upper back, gets a frozen sholder if she sits in certain positions.
her legs tingle if she stands up too long, and when she sleeps at night she has a restless feeling all over and only releif is painkillers.
swim gets a sharp pain in her ribs and near her heart when she breeths in when her back is really bad.

current doctors conclustion: rumatic pain with proper exersise pain will stop, no painkillers needed, just anti inflamatories.
previosly prescribed.

co-proxamol
co-dydramol
remadine. none of these work, swim has to take 4 remadine to get any effect.

doctor wont go any stronger.

ok so question:
whats do you think the strongest painkiller swim is entitled to with these simptons?
does anyone else have a similer problem?
what class would you say swims pain is?
swim thinks its moderate to severe and on a scale of 1-10 most days pain is at 8.
swim also thinks its defenetly chronic.

thankyou all for your time and answers, swim just really wants to get it right when she goes to a new doctor. and not screw it up and just be back at square one.

xx

ok so answers:
Ultram (tramadol), Darvon or Darvocet (propoxyphene), and if SWIY's doctor is any good, possibly Vicodin/Lortab (hydrocodone)
Millions suffer with symptoms similar to SWIY's.
Like SWIY suggested, pain level would be chronic, and if it ranks 8, certainly moderate-severe.

It's all about finding the right doctor - one that can empathize and make sense of your pain, and who is not afraid to prescribe what is necessary for the patient's comfort.

Re: new doctor, pls advise.

pain management doctors would treat your pain , the problem is then for the rest of your life your taking opiates for pain, that will probably rob you of energy , you're young and life is just starting. Medicines like hydrocodone ( vicodin, loratab) are addicting physically, that means that if you miss or stop taking the meds, your body will demand them , in the form of being real sick ( withdraws )
Those are just the baby opiates , if you were to get oxycodone ( oxycontin ) , morphine, or percadan those really will grab a hold of you. So before going that route , please try and exhaust all of your other options, Just trying to help BTDTA

Re: new doctor, pls advise.

thankyou both
swim dosnt want to take opiates like morphine and stuff, but tramadol or vicodin swim is ok with that.
swim knows that its not the best situation to stay on opiates for the rest of swims life, but seriosly swim has had this for 6 years and been back and forth to clinics, chiropractors, rumatology,. physio.. swim is fed up, swim would rather just get the right painkillers that work and get a repeat prescription, much easier, maybe after a while of pain relief then look into pain managment again but for now swim just needs a rest.

as of yet swim hasnt found any painkiller that really works.
but swim is hopfull a new doctor would help.

Re: new doctor, pls advise.

If you are going to clinics, you must not have a docter, and if you do they would think you are a drug seeker. But if you do not then push for a MRI, if you have tingling down your leg, a disc is touching a nerve and you will have proof of your injury. After proof in hand a docter would have to start you on something like tramadol. If this does or doesn't work you would be consistent on going back, and back, and back, until you have a stronger med. It will take time but eventually you will have what you want. Don't give up, but like I say your MRI is your golden ticket.

Re: new doctor, pls advise.

Nutzo is right, without some proof of your injury it is harder to obtain the needed pain meds. MRI would be your proof, although sometimes for meds like hydrocodone it's not required. I know nothing about Tramadol.

I too suffer from chronic pain, although less now than a few years ago. I had a doctor who was doing about the same as what you describe your doctor doing. He wouldn't prescribe the needed meds. So I had to get tough, I started making phone calls to his Medical Board, the people that he has to answer to , and made a formal complaint.
That woke his ass up , from then on I was getting the needed treatment, he wrote for the meds. and refered me to pain managment.
BTDTA is here anytime for you

Re: new doctor, pls advise.

yeah swim is just concerned that becuase swims accident was 6 years ago, nothing will show up on mri, thats what the doctors keep saying that there is no point in an mri.
then if it dosnt show anything, all the doctors will be like, oh you have nothing wrong with you!

Re: new doctor, pls advise.

p.s swim is also getting the feeling she is being belittled, all the doctors swim sees are older men or women and they say thinsg like, hay you dont want to take piankillers for the rest of your life do you.. what the hell does swim say to that, swim just gets so bellittled and backed into a corner swim just says well no i guess, swim is trying so hard not to sound like she wants painkillers too much becuase then they will think.. addict.

maybe you can all stand up to doctors but swim finds it really hard, when swim gets home all these things come into her head about what she would have liked to say, like

"give me the fucking painkillers, they take my pain away i dont see the problem ytou belittling old fashioned prick who gets paid shit loads of money to sit there and say yes or no to people, who do you think you are, god?"

anyway...

Re: new doctor, pls advise.

Hi bloodred,

Your symptoms sound very familiar to SWIM.

SWIM had MRI scan which shows 5 discs ruptured lower spine.

Hd to go through NSAIDS, Di-Hydrocodeine, then tramadol all worked for a little while but not very well.

SWIMnow takes 40mg OxyContin, with Oxyorm for breakthrough pain. Also amitriptyline for the nerve pain and Diazepam for the muscle spasms. This combination works bery well, albeit I do feel a bit saced out at times but not unbearably so. SWIM has it on repeat script, so no problems wih getting hold of the meds etc.

Try chnging your GP to one sympathetic to chronic pain perhaps.

Re: new doctor, pls advise.

wow thanks rep, sounds hopefull, although swims doctor refused an mri she just said there will be nothing there.

if swim can ask, how did you end up with ruptured disks?
is it possible swim could have the same?
just sounds like that would hurt so much worse and youd know as soon as it happened.

Cool Re: new doctor, pls advise.

swim feels for blood hopefully you will keep us all updated on swiy situation. hopefully soon you can get some relieft for swiy pain. know that swim is wishin swiy gets help soon. swim was wondering were swiy (someone who isn't you) can get a hold of any tylenol with codine anything with codine. if so then swiy can do a CWE (cold water extraction) which works very well and get some kind of pain relief.

Re: new doctor, pls advise.

well swim is running out of remadine and is gonna move soon to new house in about a week.
but swim is sure it takes time to set up a new doctor.
so what should swim do, go back to old doctor and say i just need one more box of remadine while i get a new doctor or wait till swim gets a new doctor.

also when swim goes to new doctor, will her record follow her or will she have to explain everything again, and will swim be able to just show the doctor the box of remadine and say.. i take these can i have some more pls?
