A new study looking at the impact of a ban on BZP shows a black market for the pills could prove to be highly profitable.
More than half of the participants were prepared to pay more for party pills once they are made illegal.
Experts predict that black market party pills will eventually be cut with other illicit drugs.
For more than six years getting party pills has been easy and for some people legal stimulants have become part of a standard night out.
Kate Bryson's research into BZP found that of 60 users interviewed, a third said they would pay double the current price of party pills for illegal ones and that the demand for ecstasy will increase once party pills are banned.
Former detective and drug educator Mike Sabin says organised crime will seize on the market gap, but MP Jim Anderton disagrees, saying people said the same thing about NOS and it has not happened.
Perhaps the most disturbing result of Bryson's research was the reason three participants gave for taking party pills - taking them daily to lose weight.
