Kava-kava.. no effect not worth it?

SWIM and a friend took 5 grams orally of Kava-kava acquired from a new age store in a bottle. The effects were minimal and far less than a marijuana high. After this dissapointment, more was obtained. This time an extraction was done by a chemist friend(he likes to do this kinda stuff) A couple bowls were smoked of the extraction, and again 5grams of refined material taken orally. Stronger effects but no more than a mild marijuana high. Tried the same thing with different kava, same little effect. so whats up with this then? I cant see how people enjoy kava
