Trippy Film & Trippy Literature
'Ello thar.
I was just wondering what trippy films and (dare I say it...) books other DF users enjoy. I'm not necessarily talking of books & films that are good when one is a little "inebriated", but I'm talking of generally interesting ones. My (totally inaccurate) definition of trippy: "Shit that gives one a proper 'mindfuck' feeling, shit that is deep, meaningful and inspirational, shit that is just darn random as a sheep with tourettes". Film These are among my favs:
I'm not a massive reader... well ok that's a blatant lie. I'm a huge reader. Here are some interesting books which may or may not be drug-related:
Jabberwocky: A ridiculously stupid poem by Lewis Carroll. It (as far as I'm concerned) means nothing, but it made SWIM laugh while stoned. A Man Said To The Universe: This is a short (and I mean short) poem by Stephen Crane. It actually does have a meaning, but I can't be bothered to go into the inferred meaning etc etc as this is not a literature forum. Good if you want a moment of deep thought (SWIM recommends thinking about this if SWIY was say, having a high plateau DXM experience for example). Quote:

Don't Forget Pink Floyd The Wall, The Big Lebowski, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and swim tells me Monty Python and the holy Grail is an absolute riot when stoned.

Not heard of Fear & Loathing, but of course!! The wall - CLASSIC! And SWIM would agree, Monty Python IS a riot when stoned. Not seen the holy grail, but the life of brian was good enough.

Re: Trippy Film & Tripp Literature
granted what i said is not a film but i suppose i could say "The Cell, Dark crystal , The yellow submarine, Jacobs ladder etc."
ummm.. apart from some drunken possible spelling mistakes. only u it seems.... everyone else seems to get it but let me brake it down for you. Aphex Twins, did a random song called WINDOW LICKER. All swia said was watch this one on a head full of mushrooms of the psilo kind or watch it stoned she is not ordering, she jus found it enjoyable when she did watch it. that any easier on the old noggin darkglobe? if u want i can explain it in private message.. |

Re: Trippy Film & Tripp Literature
Ahh now, surely shome mishtake Mishter Globe? Peel back the bark and observe the woodland community. Read through the cruel disguise and wordly wise will be the next stop on the comprehension line.
The yak has asked me to say that he finds Fantasia a fantastic accompaniment to any shroomery shenanigans. He's easily pleased though (in some matters). |

I'll add the Illuminatus! Trilogy, The Hitchhikers series by Douglas adams, and the discworld novels by Terry Pratchett for trippy and funny when on drugs literature.

Re: Trippy Film & Tripp Literature
"The Man Who was Thursday" is one of my favorite books..what a crazy plot. Has anyone seen the Beatles musical "Across the Universe" yet? Trippy as hell! Swim has seen it twice now and it was great, now he wants to see it sober so he can remember the plot.

The hitchikers guide... I've only seen the film version, but the only funny bit was at the end when the mouse says "oh, bollocks".
TMWWT is indeed an excellent read. Very odd, though, I agree. |

Re: Trippy Film & Tripp Literature
Agreed sterling, the new movie Across the Universe is fantastic.
The movie Amelie is even kind of trippy in a way, if you pay attention to color and style. Some great novels: Life of Pi, the His Dark Materials series. |

Re: Trippy Film & Trippy Literature
I like Amelie because it can be appreciated from many angles. The story is very charming, funny, and uplifting, you'll be guaranteed to feel happy at the end of it. The cinematography is amazing, there are some shots in the movie that are just unbelievable (for example the rock skipping scene). And from an artists point of view, it is fascinating. You're guaranteed to find large amounts of red and green in almost every shot in the movie. I've seen it 3 or 4 times and noticed new stuff each time.
Interestingly, the guy that made it is in the process of making a movie version of Life of Pi, one of my favorite books. I can't wait until that comes out. And going back to your original post, the end of Life of Pi is one of the biggest mindfucks I've ever experienced. |

Re: Trippy Film & Trippy Literature
Pans Labyrinth... couldnt sleep at all after it had been watched. A true eye opener to the nature of chaotic reality and perfect psychosis... or not.. its all open to interpretation, not great as in awsome, infact the animation was just puppets, and the storyline wasnt that creative, its just the idea of... well, a seperate world, and its loss of innocence... its flaws add to its perfection, a true masterpeice, incredibly trippy, and a must to watch...
Also, cant really beat 300... the colours and pictures are what the film was made for... |
