Dose - What would be good Xanax (Alprazolam) dosage? Experienced User

As SWIM understands it, it is quite difficult to OD on a benzo alone. He has been taking dosages of around 4mg without really getting intoxicated. Would it be safe to switch to a dosage of 6?

There's some tolerance issues there! SWIJ wouldn't jump to 6mg. She would go up in 0.5's just to be cautious. SWIY can always take more, but they can never take less.

SWIJ also finds that the amnesia effects get greater with increasing the doses. Many times she woke up with little memory of what had happened, an empty bottle of pills and a house resembling a disaster zone.

Good advice. 2mg jump is too much at one time. Sounds like SWIM has quite a tolerance for benzos. benzos were THE MOST DIFFICULT substances for SWIM to kick, more so than even heroin. Be careful.

It is actually quite easy to OD on benzos. If SWIM is very prone to amnesia, SWIM may not remember how many pills were taken, what else was taken, etc. A chap SWIM knows OD'ed this way, but was able to be revived (luckily).

The PDR says if you exceede 4mg/day the risk for dependance jumps and other bad things will happen.SWIM been to 6 writers and cant/couldn't get one to break the 4mg/day barrier.them docs live by that number.SWIM is pushing one atm for 6mg/day.Not so much to eat 6mg/day but hes sick of the 1 refill,maybe having a pill left on appt. day. depending where the 60th day falls.SWIM wants a lil back up.

How much does SWIY weigh? A nice dose that won't make SWIyou too tired could possibly be 1-2mg

Remember that your flamingo can always take more, they can never take less. They should start low and work their way up.

0.25-0.5mg might be appropriate. Leaping in with higher doses could easilly result in sleep for the benzo-naive

SWiM doesn't have a flamingo, but his hippopotamus from outer space fell asleep like a log when he tried a benzo for the first time. It was 40 mg's of diazepam. That is a high amount by the way. A week later he was up all night long after 200 mg's, which is a very large amount, sometimes fatal for some people and especially in combination with alcohol for example. Tolerance comes very fast and many people don't even remember their starting dosage, so don't take the same amounts experienced users would. I'm not going to argue with Queen Jatelka's advice, but personally SWiM would start at 1 mg. Everyone's different though.

SWIM feels that Jatelka is there to make sure that SWIMMERS know that substances can be dangerous and as such, is more conservative. Thats a good thing, as it is a harm-reduction forum, and there are waaaay too many people that think "hey its a pill, its gotta be safe".

Back on the subject, SWIM's favorite dosage is 4mg, but thinks that even 2mg may be too strong for a beginner. SWIM is tolerant to benzos, so 4mg will likely cause a blackout/pass out reaction to many people. He agrees with HH, 1mg is a good dose. Xanax/Alprazolam is a very quickly acting drug, it only takes roughly 15 minutes to kick in for SWIM. If you want to go further, SWIY can take more quickly.

Largely, Xanax is a very safe medication. It is prescribed in dosages up to 2mg/4x daily, in fact, SWIM was in the hospital after experiencencing a panic attack for the first time, and was given 2 2mg alprazolam/xanax tablets to help. He is fairly sure this wouldn't cause an overdose (you CAN overdose, though) but rather your biggest danger is total amnesia, passing out, and/or doing stupid things. And trust an experienced SWIMMER, that IS a danger.

Just make sure you start slow, its easy to re-dose 20 minutes later, but very difficult to un-dose yourself

In what form are your tablets? .25, .5, 1mg, or 2mg bars? Swim thinks that 4mg is easily better than heaven. However, 6mg is a pointless blackout. 2mg, on the other hang 'rounds the corners' of a rough day. Yummy.

SWIM weight fluctuates between 140-155lbs a lot and 1mg will only give him a light buzz, similar too a few beers(yet different, as it is xanax after all). But as everyone said before about starting slow, I forgot to say that, and it's true. Once SWIyou dose you aren't going back, and SWIyou can easily raise the dose in time, to find that sweet spot. For SWIY weight SWIM thinks 3mg might be our sweet spot, but SWIM would start at 1mg, and work his way up by .5mg until he finds that sweet spot. And once the experience is over, you will have a close gauge to your sweet spot. Also don't mix with alcohol.

Bear in mind, also, that a higher body-weight is not necessarily an indicator for the need for larger initial doses.

I know you all think I'm a clucking hen, but for harm reduction purposes (and in my flamingos distinctly unhumble opinion) a good initial dose for the benzo-naive is significantly lower than 2mg

Queen is correct. SWIM is 6'3'' 250 lbs and he takes 1mg and is very calming.
2mg would not swim down. Start at .75mg to 1mg.

Whatever your tolerance try 1mg first and wait a few hours.
If it knocks you down reduce dosage. If you barely feel it
then try 2mg.

Be careful with whatever you decide to start with. .5 mg of Xanax makes SWIM seemingly pass out/fall asleep within a half hour (everything seems to turn to static tingling and he doesn't enjoy it). He and a buddy of his split a 2 mg bar once and his friend later told him that she later passed out in a bathtub.

SWIM suggests starting with .25 to be on the safe side, but it all depends on how it makes SWIY feel.

SWIM would say xanax (alprazolam) is ones of those drugs where the answer to "what is a good dose?" is on a par with "how long is a piece of string?"

Yeah you can say this with a lot of drugs but for example "how much mdma to take for the first time?" is a question that can been answered with reasonable logic.

The medical profession can't agree on what dose, efficacy, withdrawal of benzo's in clinical settings so apart from reading some basic info on alprazolam (xanax) that's going to be a hard question to answer.

SWIM would recommend being careful with benzo's. Tolerance and addiction is something that creeps up on people much more quietly than other traditionally addictive drugs. Keep safe.

1mg will have strong effect.
2mg advise go to bed.
This all depends on your tolerance level.

swim is a tiny person, 5'11", 130lb.

swim has taken xanax three times, all three times was a 1mg dose.

this was enough to make swim passout after a few hours and not have any memory after swim woke up.

just start low, dont want to take too much at once and passout and waste the trip. swim would suggest 1mg, and up the dose .5mg as needed.

SWIG recently took 0.75mg in preparation for a flight. SWIG loved the whole experience - clouds never looked so fluffy! But SWIG generally takes 0.5mg to calm himself down or get himself off to sleep.
