UNITED KINGDOM: UK consolidates drugs regulations; further restricts substances, maintain medical cannabis basis(18/01/2002)
The British Home Office has published three new Statutory Instruments related to the Misuse of Drugs Act. The regulations are now available on the ELDD and enter into force on 1 February 2002.
Three regulations have been published:
1. The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 (Modification) Order 2001, that adds 36 phenethylamine derivatives to Schedule 2 of the Act;
2. The Misuse of Drugs (Designation) Order 2001, that lists substances excluded from the ability to be regulated for medical purposes and includes 35 of the above substances; and
3. The Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001, that consolidate and update the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 1985 and subsequent amendments. This again includes the 36 phenethylamine derivatives, and tightens controls on 33 benzodiazepenes and 8 other substances. The Regulations maintain in ss.12 and 13 the legal basis for research into medical cannabis in the UK.
