Is he still doing it?

SWIM doesn't know whether to believe a colleague who claims not to take speed any more but is terribly thin and eats very little....claims to have a thyroid problem? Is SWIM being duped, is this an old excuse??

Any thoughts please...

Re: Is he still doing it?

here's a few quotes from wikipedia (that I cross checked just to make sure of) concerning thyroid problems

hyperthyroidism : "Major clinical weight loss (often accompanied by a ravenous appetite)"

hypothyroidism : "Weight gain"

by the look of it, if he has an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) he's going to lose weight, but also eat lots-- if he has an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), he's going to gain weight. Neither set of symptoms really match what he's claiming is caused by his thyroid (under eating and weightloss)-- not to mention there's treatment for both conditions; so if he knew it was a thyroid problem, a doctor would know as well and he would be treated.

my best guess is that you're being duped - sorry

Re: Is he still doing it?

It's his/her business. The last thing the person needs is being confronted. A gentle suggestion that one cares is enough. Leave it there. If it means that much - remain friends, but move on. Maybe they will get a message.

Re: Is he still doing it?

Look for other signs of abuse, such as loss of personal care, lack of money and activity at unusual times(early morning, late night). If someone is doing enough speed to start losing weight, they will usually show multiple signs of abuse. You know them better than anyone here, if something's suspicious you're probably right.
