Mushrooms and Ego Death

I've heard while on shrooms one can temporarily "lose" their ego and superego, thus becoming all Id. Sounds interesting, yet also frightening, so I want to hear of any evidence or actual proof that this is not just a myth, or if there have been any actual psych studies on this. Hopefully someone in here can give me some psychological insight.

Re: Loss of Ego/Superego on Shrooms?

:isclaimer:: This is a post I found on a totally diferent forum and am simply copying and pasting... this was not written by me or about me, I dont use drugs, and I never have...

I have been through some interesting experiences with psychedelics, and yes it can be extremely frightening, even traumatic. What causes these situations is i think if a person is so ego driven and has trouble seeing other points of view (arrogant, i used to be a little) this can have an adverse reaction to the person's psyche. It is like realizing, you could be completely wrong about everything.... but.. what can make this experience so extremely powerful and beautiful is acknowledging that fact, and choosing to believe what you do... becuase whether we realize it or not, that is what we are doing all of the time. Some things are easier to believe than others, but when a person is broken down... and faced with themselves its all about what you beleive and if you beleive that the loss of ego, the loss of single mindedness and understanding of what you think to be real is frightening, then guess what it is.... it just depends on how you look at it...

if you are thinking about trying some psychedelics, cool, just make sure that you are with some friends who you are close with and be in a safe environment, if you take care of those two things, you should have a great time!

Re: Loss of Ego/Superego on Shrooms?

Interesting, but I meant ego in psychological terms, Freud's personality theory to be precice, not the way it's used in everyday language.

Basically he claims there are three divisions of the psyche. Id, ego, and superego.

The superego basically acts as your conscience, it stands in opposition to the id, because the id is said to be driven by the pleasure principle. basically, all the most basic of human needs/emotions[anger, hunger, sex etc] is what the id is. without the superego or ego, you're acting on the most basic animal instincts, disregarding social rules, there is no control.

the ego is basically the mediator between the two. If the id had it's way it would be wild. if the superego had it's way, there would be no flexibility. The ego balances the two out and mediates the two with the external world.

I'm sorry i tried to make that as simple and short as i could!
