Hi. I'm a new member here. I will intro myself when I have more time. I do have a pressing question. I bought San Pedro juice about 2 months ago and proceeded to wait for the "right" time. Now I am concerned about its shelf life. Can anyone shed some light on this subject? I'd like to drink it on the winter solstice. (This upcoming Tuesday) I have never drunk or tasted it before and don't know what "gone bad" would taste like. |

I see there are no replies to my question. Does this mean no one knows? Or did I post in the wrong section? I tried Erowid and no answer either. Please, if any one has an inkling. I have put off my "date" til I hear something! |

A situation such as this could potentially be serious, which is why most extracts that are intended to be kept for longer periods of time are either dry solids such as powders kept in airtight containers, or liquid tinctures in a solution of over 60% ethanol (i.e. everclear). This way bacterial and fungal growth can be discouraged, and the active constituents can also be preserved for a greater length of time. The famed mycologist Paul Stamet's wife, Cruz, has suggested that mushroom tea should not be kept for more than 2 days, even if refrigerated, since both contaminants will begin to take hold of the aqueous solution as well as the psilocybin may begin to break down. <!-- var SymRealOnLoad; var SymReal; Sym() { window.open = SymWinOpen; if(SymReal != null) SymReal(); } SymOnLoad() { if(SymRealOnLoad != null) SymRealOnLoad(); window.open = SymRealWinOpen; SymReal = window.; window. = Sym; } SymRealOnLoad = window.onload; window.onload = SymOnLoad; //--> <!-- var SymRealOnLoad; var SymReal; Sym() { window.open = SymWinOpen; if(SymReal != null) SymReal(); } SymOnLoad() { if(SymRealOnLoad != null) SymRealOnLoad(); window.open = SymRealWinOpen; SymReal = window.; window. = Sym; } SymRealOnLoad = window.onload; window.onload = SymOnLoad; //--> Edited by: Eirias |

Really, the San Perdro juice should have been frozen if you were going
to keep it around that long. Refrigerated juice should be used up probably no longer than after 2 weeks of storage. The main concern would be bacteria or other nasties growing in it, not the loss of alkaloids. You can dice your fresh pedro into little chunks, ready for the blender, and freeze the chunks in bags too for future use. This actually seems to help later on with extracting the mescaline, as the freezing/thawing cycle breaks down the cell walls in the plant matter. |

The alkaloids will be converted to their carbonates if it's left in contact with the air too long. After converting to the freebase the alkaloids will start todecompose in a matter of hours if it's not converted back into a salt. I assume you where just going to drink it though. <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn chemas-microsoft-com ffice ffice" />
