Duration of codeine vs poppy tea

Swim's a little confused. He frequently uses codeine and poppyseed tea and enjoys them both (although if he had to choose between the two it'd definitely be codeine). As he understands, codeine is only psychoactive once it has been converted to morphine, and PST or PPT is psychoactive because it contains morphine and codeine. Why then, do the effects of PST and PPT last so much longer than codeine. Sometimes Swim has still felt the effects of the tea up to and just over 12hours after ingestion whereas codeine can no longer be felt after about 6 hours maximum.

Any ideas?

hmm.. swim isnt sure, its could be because codeine is just pure codeine, and because PST and PPT contain the opiates morphine and codeine, but also the benzylisoquinolines Papaverine and thebaine aswell as oleamide. Swim isn't sure if the mix of these is what causes the longer duration but could be.

Could also be that as you state codeine has to be converted to morphine to be active and the activity of the enzyme that metabolizes codeine can convert between 5% and 10% to morphine, which is a bit of a difference! but swim is only hypothesizing.

Maybe someone can shed some light on the subject! Tortoise has inspired swims interest in the question!
