Drug info - What fake powdered substance is used for Cocaine snorting scenes in Films?

SWIM is looking to make an independent mock-documentary type film in the near future about cola usage and the effects of using the powdered substance. SWIM is looking to use close up shots of the actors snorting a fake cola powder substance. SWIM has been told by some of my film colleagues that we should perhaps use baby milk formula or perhaps just powdered milk.

Does SWIY know if this is correct, and if not what substance could be used to fake cola for film purposes

There is probably no real snorting involved in movies. Or maybe it's just real cocaine lol.

Understood. SWIM also thinks that this is often the case and I suppose if SWIM can convince the funders of the film for a bigger budget, then they could use real cola.

SWIM prefers to have actors snorting a physical substance for a better effect, so if SWIY has an idea, keep us posted

they are probably not really snorting i think...
but a good substance would be "manitol" it's white oderless and doesnt have any effect what so ever
it is also used to cut amphetamine in europe allot

SWIM has not heard of "Manitol". SWIM is based in Europe so I am sure he will come across the odorless substance sooner rather than later.

You could improvise an insufflating prop, it shouldn’t be that complicated, then you can use whatever white powder is available.

For the movie "Blow" the actors snorted powdered milk. Talk about a nasty drip!

SWIM is grateful for the replies thus far. He says he would definitely like to film the actors actually snorting a powder. SWIM says sugar is too 'white', but perhaps powdered milk or baby formula will do the trick. I suppose we can have SWIM test those 2 and wait for that drip sensation

SWIM will look for Inositol, thank you. SWIM also asks where SWIY got this information about Inositol powder being used in film? SWIM asks if you know of any specific films that used the Inositol substance for snorting scenes in film?

insitol and mannitol are common cocaine cuts, most street cocaine has a fair quanity of these powders as inert cutting agents. Not sure if they have used it in movies but it would likely look like cocaine as it is often represented for the most part as cocaine.

understood and SWIM says thank you for the info. It seems after SWIM researched both inositol and mannitol, that they could be indeed potentially be used for prop cocaine for filming purposes. SWIM will of course have to do some further research and then do some real testing if all goes well. Much appreciated

Avoid anything with large and grainy crystals like sugar as it will be a pain to snort and also doesn't look that much like the real thing. Carefully snorted snuff might work, so long as they don't get it right up into the sinuses and leave it in the main nasal cavity. In the UK there used to be, and probably still are, caffeine powders and party powders available from head shops that were pretty ineffective but looked relativley realistic. How close are you going to be getting to the powder itself? Will the intended audience be likley to have much experience with cocaine? To many people any whitish powder snorted by someone must be cocaine and, seeing as there are a large number of adulterants used on the black market, you could easily justify cocaine being too white by saying it was cut with speed etc.

The simplest way to have fake snorting is to have the actors blow it out of a device, instead of snort it up their nose, and play it backwards.

Again, SWIM says thank you for the replies. SWIM didn't know that powdered milk was used in the film, 'Blow'. SWIM will be doing close up shots for the snorting scenes, so the substance must be very close to the real thing. SWIM will probably arrange to buy some of the real substance and then play around with the mock substances until we get the texture and colour close to perfect. SWIM thinks it will be fun testing

dried powdered milk is most often used in movies, swim wrote a report on it last year in school, its said to look more like real coke than many other powdered substances
