Opinions - does crack make people pieces of crap?

I recently went back to visit my hometown. while there I looked up my old best friend. This guy used to be very athletic , smart , and had it going on. Today he loves to smoke crack and that is about as far as it goes. He has a couple of children that he doesnt support , he is more in love with crack than his own kids. My question is , would he probaly be that way even without his addiction to Crack or is the drug the blame for his actions?

When you become addicted to something like crack, your use of the drug becomes impulsive rather than voluntary. This is past the stage of self medication or recreational use. The drug might have control over him and destroy his motivations. Drugs can certainly change the way people act, for better or worse.

I wouldn't necessarily blame the drug but instead the collection of events leading up to the drug use and dependency. Does he not take care of his kids because he smokes crack or does he smoke crack because he feels helpless and inadequate to raise his children....chicken or the egg? Mayo or mustard? There's a lot more to any given situation that you have to look at. You can't just blame the drug for his actions although they might have a lot to do with them.

I know that he spends every cent that he can muster up for a rock, instead of paying his bills first then getting a piece with what is left over
swib smoked a couple of rocks with him and it's sad because the shit was very weak, no rush or nice taste. he is spending his life on half assed bogus crack, and he doesnt even notice

People are people, and addiction can do one thing to one person and another to someone else. For some when a substance gets its teeth into them there is no letting go untill the grave. Others can shake it off or function normally with a habit.

observation has shown that some people with addictions are arseholes, others are nice folk.

Its just people at the ned of the day.

Damn he is buying shitty crack that doesn't even get him high? Part of the addiction could just be the ritual. The ritual of smoking or more importantly, shooting, can be extremely rewarding. The crack might suck and you might not get high but the addict can benefit even if the crack sucks because he is engaging in the ritual which they are so accustomed to. This is exactly why some junkies will shoot straight water if they cant get junk. Even shooting water will give them some form of reward or relaxation.

This is sad. SWIM doesnt know whether it would be best for him to have good crack or bad crack. If you're going to be doing a drug you might as well get the premium stuff but this guy needs help. Do what you can to help the guy.

Thank you for understanding , it is sad , and the ritual thing makes sense.
He must be addicted to the act of it, because I know it cant be a jones for the rush or even to bump up his energy level , B/C swim didnt feel too much and has not built up any tolerance to it , although my system is tough from other things, but swim knows what good cola is supposed to do.
As far helping him, I can only pray for him, He and I don't talk, He wanted me to buy some one night so I did , the next thing I know , He is hiding the stuff telling me its gone and that there is a piece dropped on the carpet and I should get it. like I am the crack head . no I dont think so
