GHB/GBL Basics?

i notice that most of the forums here have a sticky regarding the basics of its respective drug. knowing nothing about GHB/GBL and being the knowledge-seeking creature i am, i love the insight of these posts and the collective knowledge provided here. swim has never tried this type of substance, so the following information is just from personal research.

GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is classified as a depressant intoxicant. it is used both as a sleep aid and a recreational intoxicant.

History:

In the early 1960's, all scientific reports on GHB classified it as a safe chemical. One of the big benefits discovered by these scientists was that they concluded GHB to have little to no toxicity. it was considered a safe anesthetic. even up to 1989, GHB was still being used for many purposes. when treating people with severe alcohol withdrawal, GHB seemed to act without any serious side effects. in 1991, the potential for abuse was finally realized when interviews with patients described GHB as a pleasurable high, many of them continued to take it just to feel good. the FDA banned the substance based on 'feeling good' being a threat to public health. there is a lot of controversy around exactly why the FDA banned the substance.

GHB and the body:

GHB is an inhibitor of dopamine, so dopamine will be stored in the brain and later released when the GHB wears off.

GHB also stimulates the pituitary growth hormone, as the dopamine is inhibited, the GH hormone activity increases

Anesthetic doses are also known to increase blood sugar

Dangers:

GHB is very similar to alcohol in the fact that higher doses can result in total loss of consciousness and sometimes, coma. most GHB-related poisonings are due to mixing with other drugs, particularly alcohol.

Re: GHB/GBL Basics?

Don't forget the withdrawal syndrome of GHB/GBL itself.

Regardless of peoples anecdotal reports GHB/GBL CAN and DOES cause in some cases serious and nasty withdrawals especially if an individuals use pattern has shifted towards a 24/7 habbit - redosing every few hours.

It might be safe, it might be non-toxic but in a way this can sometimes be part of the problem. Alcohol can be self limiting to some extent due to nasty effects from acetaldehyde on the body. GHB the only limiting factor might be the rebound effects which are quenched by taking more GHB.

In SWIMS opinion the negative propaganda against GHB/GBL has left a big vacuum for people to completely ignore such unnecessarily extreme cautions/advice and instead believe GHB is the all singing, all dancing safe and endogenous drug that is banned because of politics. The reality is probably somewhere in between.

UTFSE and read through the D-F GHB archive section, you will find that there is a wealth of information. With the manufacture of Xyrem came many many scientifically researched studies and analysis.
